Notes for Minnie Viola Brannen: By - Velma W. Angelo - January 2001
Minnie Viola Brannen Ledden was my paternal Grandmother with whom I spent many of my early summers. They - Grandad & Grandmom - lived in the south side of the double house on Poplar Street in Glassboro. My Aunt Edna (Daddy's Sister) lived in the other half. There was a wood shed out back that was filled each summer tight full to the rafters with cut and split wood, as the house - early on - was heated with wood stoves. Grandmom cooked on a wood range in the kitchen during the cooler months. in the real hot weather, there was a small 4 burner gas stove in the outer kitchen to use so that the house was not so hot as it would have been if the wood range had been used. Every Saturday, Grandmon polished the wood range so that it was shinny as black satin. She also baked all kinds of things, but what I remember most were her super delicious ginger cookies - just a little crisp on the out side, but soft inside and every one of them just the same size. Grandmom had a huge Gardenia plant that was in a big wash tub. It had hundreds of beautiful white flowere on it every summer - more than a hundred by actual count. It took my Daddy and my Uncle Earl both to carry it out of the basement in the summer and back into the basement in the fall. Grandmom made all of my clothes when I was young - one of my very favorite dresses was a white & yellow dotted swiss - It had tiny square pearl buttons down the front. There is a picture of me at about 6 years in a red crepe dress with black velvet yoke and four inch wide black velvet hem. Every sunday we went to church - i wore hat and gloves no matter how hot the day - Grandmom had church envelopes (because she was a baptised member) in which we put our collection. A quarter went into the church side of the envelope, and 15 cents went into the Mission side. We always sat in the very same pew every week, but they were not named , nor bought pews. Grandmom taught me to crochet and embrroidery
