Notes for Rena Lashley Griffith: Things I (Velma W. Ledden) remember of my Aunt Rena Lashley Griffith Crispen
At the time of the birth of Barbara Ann Crispen & the death of Aunt Rena, (Aunt Rena died of complications of child birth), Aunt Rena & Uncle Alvin were living in Monroeville N.J. and farming for Paul E. Crammy's firm "Crammey Milk Carriers". Uncle Alvin was the site farmer in charge of the dairy and the associated farming business. Aunt Rena was burried from the home, and I (Velma W. Ledden) a cousin, (as my mother Edna F. Ledden was a sister to Rena Crispen) was close in age to Dottie Crispen (aunt Rena & uncle Alvins oldest child, I stayed close to Dottie the day of the funeral and I remember that Dottie was not pleased with the way her mothe looked and got some rouge & lipstick to add a little color to her mothers face. Aunt Rena baked the most beautiful Golden Spongue ( the dozen yolks) cakes & Angel Food Cakes. She started with one dozen duck eggs - room temperature - broken in two large yellow mixing bowls - (one bowl for whites & one bowl for yolks). First the Golden Spongue was done and baked in a cook stove oven (the dozen yolks). Then the eggwhites were emptied from the bowl on to a very large meat platter. Aunt Rena would then hand beat the whites with a wire whip till they stood in stiff peaks. The only other ingredients were some sugar & some levening & a few pinches of flour. These cakes come out perfect every time. !!!!!
