The funeral of Mrs. Martin Higgins, who died in Philadelphia on Saturday last, took place yesterday from her late home in Valley, and was very largely attended. Services were held in St. Cecelia's Catholic Church, and Rev. J. A. Holahan preached an able sermon. He said it was not customary for the church to eulogize the dead, but he thought this was a case where it seemed too much could not be said in memory of a faithful Christian and a good woman, one whom everybody had a good word for, and in strong words he urged all present to imitate her in her strict religious principles. The pall bearers were six nephews of the deceased, four of them bearing the name of Timothy Toomey. A large number of friends were present from Chester, Wilmington and other places. A sad incident in connection with her death was that she left the Presbyterian Hospital early last week and expected to spend a few days in the city with friends before her return, on Saturday last. Her children had made great preparations to receive her and on the day fixed for her return the wires carried the news that death had claimed her at the home of her friends, and instead of returning home alive her body came on the train she was expected to return on.

05-10-1897

Mrs. Martin Higgins, an account of whom we published on Saturday as dying in Philadelphia, passed away early that morning at the home of a friend, where she was spending a few days before her return home after having an operation performed at the Presbyterian Hospital. The body was taken to her late home on Saturday evening and the funeral will take place on Thursday. Deceased had resided in the vicinity of Coatesville for a number of years and leaves several children to mourn her loss. Among them being Richard, employed at the Luken's Iron Works; John, an employe at the Downingtown foundry; William, who is learning carriage painting at Dorsheimer's factory; Ella, and three younger ones, who are at home. She was a sister of Mrs. Humphrey Lynch and John Toomey, of Valley, and Timothy Toomey, who resides on Chestnut street, Coatesville. She was a member of the Catholic Church, well liked by all who knew her, and her husband and family have the sympathy of the community.
