History of Ballycotton

The name Ballycotton derives from the Gaelic Baile Choitín; coitín being the diminutive of coite which means a cut-off slice or portion; a small skiff.
The Danes may have landed at Ballycotton on their way to plunder Cloyne in the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries.
Lewis Topographical Dictionary tells us that Ballycotton is a village and ploughland in the parish of Cloyne, Barony of Imokilly, County of Cork and province of Munster, 4 miles southeast from Cloyne, containing 856 habitants. The Book of Cloyne gives this description of Ballycotton: This is an isolated portion of the parish, situated on the shore of a bay of the same name in St. George’s channel, six miles from Poor Head, and consists of a scattered village comprising about 150 small houses, it is much frequented in the summer for sea-bathing. At the entrance of the bay are two islands called the Ballycotton islands situated five miles from the mainland. This is one of the five stations of coast-guard that are comprised within the district of Youghal.
Their is a lighthouse situated on one of the islands which was built after several ships had been wrecked in the vicinity of Ballycotton in the 1830’s and 1840’s.

Obituary: Madison Press, July 6, 1909

Mrs. Mary Haley Higgins, aged 75, wife of John Higgins, died suddenly of neuralgia of the heart at her home on East First street at 5:30 o'clock last Saturday evening. She had been failing in health for some time, but on Saturday she was feeling much better and was taken worse while seated on the porch, but had gone into the house and laid down on the couch, and by the time the family reached her side she was in the throes of death.
The deceased was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and came to Wilmington, Delaware, when a young lady, and was married to Mr. Higgins in 1861, and in 1862 the couple came to Madison county, where they settled on a farm near Sedalia, after which they moved to Oak Run township, and by hard work and management they bought a piece of the Chrisman land, where they remained until about five years ago, when they moved to East First street, London.
There were ten children born to the union, eight of whom are now living as follows: Mrs. Peter Morrissey, Paint township; Mary, on the home farm; Catherine, at home; Sister Lorenzo, of the convent of Mercy, of Cincinnati; Benjamin and Dan; on the home farm; Matthew, on the Dwyer Bros. farm, east of London, and Thomas, lineman for the Belle Telephone Co., of Ashtabula.
She was of a kind-hearted disposition, a friend to all, a good neighbor and a woman who will be sadly missed.
The funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church Monday morning, and were very largely attended, and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery, south of town.

Death Certificate records name as Sister Mary Lorenzo Higgins, R.S.M.

Letter received June 26, 1998 from Sister Loraine, Convent of Mercy, Cincinnati, Ohio:

Johanna Higgins born January 12, 1863. (our records list her birth date as 1868, but shortly before Sister died her nieces told the superior that Sister was born in 1863) Johanna entered the novitiate (training) of the Sisters of Mercy in Cincinnati on July 12, 1890. She soon became known as Sister Mary Lorenzo. She professed final religious vows (Poverty, Chastity and Obedience) on January 5, 1893. Sister taught elementary and high school in Cincinnati, Urbana, Springfield and Piqua, Ohio for 59 years. For some of that time she was principal and local superior. She spent about a year at Mercy Hospital, Hamilton, Ohio before she died on April 10, 1957. She was senile a few years, but was able to respond until shortly before her death which was due to old age (94?) and the stroke she suffered a few days earlier.

KILLED BY A TRAIN

A Madison County Boy Meets A Horrible Death in Columbus

This community was shocked last Sunday morning to hear of the tragic death of John L Higgins, the eldest son of John Higgins, a highly respected Oak Run township farmer. The young man learned the trade of a brickmason with Daniel W. McGrath, the well known Columbus contractor, several years ago, and has since been employed by that gentleman. He has been working at Marion, O., for several weeks and left that place on the Saturday evening train with his kit of tools for Columbus. The train arrived in Columbus between 10 and 11 o'clock and was stopped at Fifth avenue long enough for Mr. H. to alight, thus saving him a walk of a couple of miles. Several sidings ran along the main tracks at this point and it is supposed the young man stepped from one track to avoid a switch engine when the fast passenger on another track struck him. He was thrown the distance of sixty feet and met an instantaneous death. The back of the skull was crushed, the neck and both legs were broken, the arms almost severed and the body badly cut. No one witnessed the accident. A track walker found the mangled remains a hour later and papers and a passbook revealed the identity of the victim of the cruel wheels. The body was prepared for shipment and on the following day was sent to London and taken to the home of the bereaved family.
Poor John! A few months ago he was in London, a happy and healthy specimen of manhood, and officiated as attendant at the marriage of a friend, and last Monday morning his remains laid before the same alter in St. Patrick's church to receive the last sad rites over the dead. The church was crowded with sympathetic friends and the funeral cortege was one of the largest that ever left this church.
The deceased was a sober, trustworthy and energetic young man, who had the respect of his acquaintances. He was one of the corps of workmen who laid brick on our new Court House and Jail, and was an excellent mechanic, although only 24 years old. The sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the grief-stricken family in the loss of a dutiful son and beloved brother.

Card of Thanks: We extend our thanks to the many kind friends who offered their assistance at the death of our beloved son and brother, John L. Higgins

DETAILS OF THE DEATH OF RICHARD HIGGINS

Extracts from letters received by London relatives give the following details of the death at Sturgess, S.D., of Richard Higgins, son of John L. Higgins of London:
John L. Higgins received letters from Mr. and Mrs. Karrels, of near Sturgess, S.D., about his son Richard, or "Dick", as they said he wanted to be called.
"He came to our place on November 28, 1905, and has been with us ever since. We loved him as a brother and considered him one of the family. Mrs. Karrels said her children would mind Richard as well as their father. She said she never heard him swear or use an immoral word, and that he was particularly kind to animals; never saw him abuse a horse. He told her not long ago it was nine years since he was home. He spoke of his home being in Ohio, but never of London; also of being in Pittsburg previous to coming here. He spoke of a sister in the convent in Cincinnati. He was sick but a few days of pneumonia. We did all we could to save him, but could not. Was buried March 6 with requiem mass, and Father Columban preached a nice sermon."
Richard made many friends and was liked by everyone. He went to Pittsburg Jan. 1, 1901. He wrote home while he was there, but since he left Pittsburg the family never heard of him until of his death.
It is quite a consolation to the family to know their son and brother was well taken care of among strangers, and feel deeply indebted to the good Mr. and Mrs. Karrels for all they did for him.
