Notes for Isaac Best:
Isaac was one of the Old 300 Settlers of the Austin Colony, but he spent his early life in Pa. & Ky, and moved to Missouri about 1808. There he built
a mill and Best's Fort, which was a pioneer refuge from the Indians, especially during the 1812 War. About 1822 Isaac, Mary Margaret, and several of their children came to Texas by Wagon Train. Aug. 19, 1824 he was granted land east of the Brazos River and about 30 miles north of S. F. Austin's Capital San Felipe. He sold the land and bought other tracts, later owning about 8,000 acres. He owned four slaves.
