| Ralph Henry Hopper married Helen Maud Russ on 29 June 1940. For their 60th (Diamond) Wedding Anniversary I researched our family tree. This has been updated since. HOPPER FAMILY. Earliest Hoppers are from Durham City and Lanchester. Then 3 generations in Wolsingham, Durham, mostly Stone masons, then William and Ann Hopper (1808, Wolsingham, Durham - Robert Hopper (1837, Wolsingham)(family moved to London) married Emma Hughes - William Hopper (1867, Westminster, London) married Mary Potier (French) - Henry Hopper (1888,Portsmouth)The early Hoppers were Stone masons for at least 3 generations. From 1887 they were Royal Navy men and lived in Portsmouth, U.K. until Dad joined the RAF in WW2! Common names - John, William, Robert, Joseph, Emma. DANNAN FAMILY. Richard and Ann Dannan (or Danan)(c.1860) Also in the Royal Navy. The Dannan family originated in Cornwall,U.K. (Robert and Hester Dannan (1680)moved to Devizes in the 1700's and to Portsmouth in the 1800's. Common names - Robert, John, William, Richard James, Ester, Mary. Henry Alfred Hopper(25.12.1888) married Minnie Beatrice Dannan (2.6.1892) on 5.5.1914. RUSS FAMILY. James Russ (1840) walked to London from Wiltshire circa 1865.. He married Sophie Melton 1872. I've traced the Russ family back to Joseph and Elizabeth Russ who married about 1730 and lived in Ramsbury, Wiltshire. James parents lived in Aldbourne, Wilts. and had 18 children! Common names - John, James, Joseph, Stephen, Charles, Charlotte. SPURDENS FAMILY. Richard Spurdans m. Frances Hall (1773) - Robert Spurdans,m. Mary Page,(1801) in Diss, Norfolk - William Spurdens ( 1817) - William Spurdens m Sarah westhrop (1840) - William Spurdens married Mary Watts (1876)- Helen Mary Spurdens (1886) Common names - William, Samuel,(both are seen in 4 generations!) Nellie (Helen and Ellen), Thomas, Robert, Norfolk, Sampson. William Percy Russ (9.4.1890) married Helen Mary Spurdens (2.7.1886) on 21.3.1915. I'd be grateful for any information and am happy to share any I may have about these families. |
