After Jessie was born the family moved to Vancouver, B.C. (1947.) Joe had to walk round Vancouver to find work as the street cars were on strike. He was able to get on digging ditches. He worked for the city until he retired in 1965 & was assistant superintendent by then. Two years after retiring he went back to work as a janitor.
His interests were reading, sports, politics, sea & ships.
