Notes for A
LEXANDER MCEACHERN:
A little History on Scotland and where my ancestors come from. The Isle of Mull and the Isle of Tyree are both in Argyll County or Argyllshire. The term Argyll means the "Land of the Gael" - Gael meaning Irish. Apparently this part of Scotland was inhabited by Irish settlers who left Ireland, therefore our real heritage may be Irish rather than Scottish. Shire means Sheriffdom so Argyllshire merely means the Sheriffdom of Argyll. The Isle of Tyree is located off the west coast of the Isle of Mull and is only 11 miles long and 2 1/2 miles wide and therefore is only one Parish - the Parish of Tyree. The Isle of Mull is much larger and is made up of 8 Parishes - Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon, Iona, Torosay, Kinlochspelvie, Kilninian & Kilmore, Salen, Ulva which was Kilninian and is now Salen, and Tobermory which was Kilmore. The MacEachern's appear to have come from the South West part of Mull which was Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon Parish. The only town of any size on the Isle of Mull was Tobermory which was the main Port. The rest of the towns were very small hamlets. My Alexander McEachern likely came from the hamlet of Glen Leidle or the hamlet of Pennyahael both located in the Parish of Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon.

Alexander MacEachern came from the Isle of Mull, in the County of Argyll, Scotland (which is in the North western part of Scotland). Many of the others in the Priceville area of Glenelg Twp., Grey County, Ontario also came from Scotland. Needless to say Gaelic was spoken fluently. Alexander MacEachern was born about 1811 and died in 1886. He was supposedly 75 according to the cemetery record when he passed away in 1886 which would make him born in 1811 if the age is correct. He had bought Lot 41, S.D.R. in 1883. His wife, the former Janet McIntyre was born on the Isle of Tyree which is located off the far Western coast of the Isle of Mull. She died in 1897 at the age of 76,(making her born in 1821 if the age is correct) living in their house until the time of her death.

Alexander sold the farm to his son Alex MacEachern, or Sandy, as he was known to friends and acquaintances. Sandy married Annie McDonald and they had four daughters; Janet, Mary (m Harry Slater), Emila "Emma" (m. George Campbell), and Sarah "Sadie" (m. Josh Townsley). Annie (McDonald) died at the early age of 31 in 1894. Sandy MacEachern later married Matihalda Anne "Annie" Stephenson in 1894. She was the daughter of John Stephenson (b. October 28, 1823 and died August 16, 1907) and Mary Grigg (b. 1843). They had a family of nine together; Margaret Edith, Euphemia "Effie", Alexandra "Allie", John who only lived nine months, Hector Joseph, Gordon, Francis, Roderick Clarence, Mathilda "Minnie", and Annie Mae.

Sandy MacEachern died in 1916, leaving his wife a heavy load. She had an auction sale of stock and implements and let the farm out on shares. The oldest son, Hector was not even 11 years old. Later Hector farmed it for awhile, as did his brother Gordon.

Their mother, Annie, died January 5, 1951, and Roddie took possession of the farm. A sister, Minnie Smith, lived here with her family, caring for her mother and then later keeping house for Roddie. When Roddie died, then Minnie the farm was left to Minnie's son Alex and daughter Anne.

Note: 1851 census in Vaughan shows Alex as 32, Ginett as 31, Mary as 11, John as 4 and Rodric as 2 on their next birthdays.

Note: 1861 census shows Alex Senior as 45, Jennet as 45, John as 10, Rodrick as 13, (I think the two boys ages were mixed up here) Mary as 17 and born in Scotland, Margaret as 6, and young Alex as 4.

Note: 1881 census shows Alexander as 61, "Gannat" as 60 and young Alexander as 23.

Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederation says: #6218 - McEachern, Alexander. From Is Mull, ARL. To Cape Breton Co, NS, <1850, Son John, b Boulardarie Is. HNS iii 192.

Notes for J
ANNETT MCINTYRE:
It would appear that her death was registered twice. The death registration #009635 has "Dup" written above her name, presumably meaning it was a duplicate. The other 8 names written with hers all had "Dup" written above them but not the rest of the page. All those names so marked were on the other page with her first death registration.#009623-#009633 and were again recorded as #009634-#009644 with her second registration #009635..
