Notes for Gaut Jonsson på Mel:Gaut Jonsson Mel was born in 1190 in Ænes gård # 64, Kvinnherad, Hordaland, Norway. He died in 1270 in Mel farm, Kvinnherad, Hordaland, Norway. Gaut Jonsson participated in a crusade in 1216, but was back in Norway later that year. By 1271 he was a Lendermann (Sheriff) and close advisor of King Håkon. Gaut attempted to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1218, but was forced to return to Norway because of a storm. He owned Mel, Hatteberg, Seim and possibly Ænes in Kvinnherad. When King Håkon invaded Scotland in 1263, Gaut remained in Norway to advise the King's son, Magnus in the rule of the kingdom. He carried the Sword of State at Magnus' coronation in 1263. Gaut only had one eye and the great Icelandic skald, Snorre Sturlasson, composed a song about his condition. Gaut is supposed to have been buried at Mel, in the so-called "Gaut-hauge."
