Gaut " Den unge" Gautsson på Hatteberg (b. 1219, d. date unknown)
Notes for Gaut " Den unge" Gautsson på Hatteberg:
Gaut Gautsson was born about 1255 in Torsnes gård # 36, Jondal, Hordaland, Norway. He died about 1340 in Hardanger, Norway. Gaut Gautson (also called Gaute unge "Gaut the younger") at Hatteberg, was also a Baron and a Knight, but they don't know much about him. He no doubt stayed home at Hatteberg, and is named in 1287 and 1288. He died about 1340. Gaut was married twice. His first wife was in all likelihood a daughter of Tore Greipson in Hardanger, who is mentioned in 1257. (This is where the controversy comes in, as most historians now believe that "Torunnsdatt" was the illegimated daughter of Sigurd Håkonson, oldest son of King Håkonson Håkonson. Historians say the "think we can establish with a probability that borders on certainty" that Torunnsdatter and the close ties of the Ænes family to the family of King Håkon. Gaut Jonsson, one of King Håkon's closest advisors would allow his son, Gaut the Younger, to marry a woman who does not at first appearance appear to be of the same high social class, only if Gaut knew who her real father was. Gaut's second wife was Katarina Ivarsdatter at "Logholo". The widow made a contract in 1306 with Bishop Arne in Bergen and purchased maintenance for life at the cloister in return for money or property.
From Henrik Lunde: with respect to Gaute Gauteson of Hattaberg, I will pass on to you what Anders Havnelid has to say about him in Volume 3 of the Kvinnherad History, published in 1988. He received the title of Baron in 1277. My Comment: He was probably not of age when his father died in 1270, thus the delay in obtaining the title his father had held. Havnelid gives Gaute's year of death as about 1340. He stated he was married to Katarina Ivarsdatter, and that Sigurd Gauteson Galte was the son of Gaute and Katarina. I believe, as we discussed before, that Gaute had earlier been married to a girl who was the daughter of Torunn married to Tore Greipson, but that the father was very likely Sigurd Håkonson. I further believe both Tore (named after his grandmother's husband: Gauteson and Sigurd (named after his real grandfather were children of the first marriage. We should not read too much into the reported agreement between Katarina Ivarsdatter and Bishop Ame in Bergen in 1306. Katarina may have been a widow when she married Gaute and the arrangement made after the death of her first husband. On the other hand, she could have been much younger than Gaute and the arrangement made in anticipation that she would outlive her husband. I just don't know, but believe Havnelid is right in the date he gives for Gaut's death. I have seen the same date in other sources which I cam not put my finger on at this time. If Havnelid is right, we can assume the Gaute was in his early eighties when he died and his son, Sigurd, survived him by only a few years. With his first wife, Gaute they think, had two children, namely they were the next owners of Hatteberg.a. Tore Gautsson
b. Sigurd Gautsson Galte (From Austrin/Strickland Ancestors web site)
