Includes NotesNotes for John J. Armstrong:
Uncle John was the jockey for the Armstrong Bros. and later on, rode and trained for King Ranch in Texas. He was the smallest of the group and was unmatched in his ability to " lap and tap" start a horse race. Seldom if ever did the Armstrong horses have to come from behind to win.
I still have the jockey saddle he hand made that was the "secret weapon" of the Armstrongs. Not only was it much lighter than the stock saddles used by the cowboys, but the ability to stay perched on it for a blazing half mile was an art unto itself. Many a long legged stranger learned this fact when after being beaten in the first race, said " I could beat you if I had that little saddle". The Armstrong Bros were more than obliged to let him borrow it for a race.
Told to me in stories by my Grandfather, Dan Armstrong, and taken from books by Robert Moorman Denhardt, about the early quarter horse. Dannie Armstrong
