ARY VINCENT TURNER:
James Mitchell Armstrong's wife was probably not named Mary Vincent Turner at birth. Shortly after the Civil War, she and her siblings were taken to a Catholic orphanage in New Orleans because the all adult members of the Turner family were dead. It is believed that her birth name was changed to "Mary Vincent" by nuns at the orphanage so she would be named for saints of the Catholic Church. The 1860 census for Alexandria, Louisiana lists three children for Rufus and Elizabeth Turner: a girl age 7 named Jane Ann, a girl age 5 named Nancy Jane, and an unnamed 2-month-old boy, assumed to be Richard Littleton Turner. If Mary Vincent Turner's birth year is 1855, she may have been the 5-year-old girl, although the recollection of family members is that she was the oldest child in her family. If the census names are correct, her birth name was either Jane Ann Turner or Nancy Jane Turner. The nuns changed her sister's name to "Elizabeth." One item that accompanied the three children to the orphanage was a deed to 200 acres of land owned by the Turners in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. The deed proved to be valid, and the land remained in Mary Vincent's family until sold in 1966.

Notes for N
ANCY CAMELIA ARMSTRONG:
Letters written in 1929-1930 by 83-year-old "Nannie" Gibbons to her sister-in-law, Mary Vincent Armstrong, describe her life and remaining family in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Nancy was a widow and probably living with her bachelor brother, Thomas Armstrong, when the letters were written. Nancy and "Tommie" were the only children of Joseph and Charlotte Armstrong living at that time. Family members mentioned in the letters include John Kreeger, widower of her sister, Harriet Ann Kreeger, and Nancy Reid, daughter of another sister, Mary Priscilla Driskell. In one letter she writes:

"John Kreeger is very poorley was in the hospital several week but lately has been taken to an old folks home. They do not think he will ever get up any more. I have not been to see him for quite a while. It is a job for me to make the trip to Kansas City any way. I have to get Nannie Reid to go with me and she is very busy teaching art at night as well as day. I am so sorry for him. Some how he don't speak his words plain and that makes it hard to be understood."

That same letter also mentions Winifred Campbell Burdette of Berea, Kentucky, daughter of another sister, Emily Frances Campbell. She writes:

"Winnie Burdett sent me her D.A.R. papers. I had to acknowledge them before a notary public. One to be sent to Washington D.C. and for the chapter they are getting up at Berea. Said she thought her papers would be ready as soon as some of the others were. I had to sign that Joseph Armstrong was my father and that Winnies mother was my sister. I guess it was because I helped her get up her paper."
