This is a compilation of some of my family with the help of Pam Court, Pearl and Merv Johnson and other family members. The main family streams are from Roger Hanly from Roscommon,Ireland. William Williams originating from Gloucester shire but stemming from Limehouse, Middlesex. The O'Neil (Neill) family originating in West Meath, Ireland and the Scandolera family from San Giovanni Bianca, Italy.
All of these members came out to Australia and creating our very diverse and interesting family. None of our families were convicts but were free settlers instead.
There is a tale that has gone through the Williams family that they are related to Sir Oliver Cromwell via his grandfather who was a Williams, but have not found the connection yet. We are also related to Sir Francis Drake (according to family lore) and if the other is possible, there might be some truth in it.
William Williams came out to Australia on the ROCKINGHAM, steered by Captain Hullibarton, arriving in West Australia swan river region in 1829. He then traveled on to Hobart on the ELIZA, captained by Captain Waddell. After he settled in Hobart he sent for his family and they arrived in Hobart in the MEDWAY, captained by Borthwick White.They settled in Hobart town where he worked as a whale boat repairer. Our grandfather William Williams, came to the mainland and settled in Yarraville near Melbourne. He fathered the first white child born in the area at the time.
The O'Neill came out mid 1800's when their country was suffering with potato blight. They lived in Clonmellon, West Meath. John O'Neil or Neil came out with his wife Catherine nee Mulligan and her five other siblings. They originally settled in South Australia but Catherine and John moved to Maryborough during the gold rush and settled in the Talbot area (Charlton). It was while here that their daughter and my great grandmother married (Christoforo)Giovanni Scandolera. After she died Giovanni returned to Italy, but his family remained.
My father was Dudley E Hanley and he was the last to arrive here in Australia and he met and married my mother in Charlton, Victoria.
