"1738 April 15 - George Sheible of Orange County (Virginia), for natural love and affection, deeded 78 acres to his grandson, George Holt. The land was located "in the fork of the Rappahannock River on both sides of the Robinson River. . . .by the Robinson River side on the north side." This deed, witnessed by William Henderson and Michael Holt (his mark) was proved Apr. 27, 1738 (Deed Book 2, pp. 287-89; Dorman, p. 49)"

"the Cherokee Indians, after having been supplied with arms and ammunition by British agents, in the summer of 1776, descended upon the outlying white settlements of N.C., S.C,. and Ga. and massacred many whites." "General Griffith Rutherford was placed in command of the N.C. militia sent against them." "The Campaign was brief but effective; the towns and crops of the Indians being destroyed and many of their number slain and scalped with few casualties among the whites. The following are the names of the officers of detachment from the southern battalion of Orange County:

Michael Holt II, an Anderson-related 5th great-granduncle, organized loyalist militiamen in Orange County to support Governor Martin. He was leading these men to Wilmington at the time of Moore's Creek Bridge Battle. Afterwards, he was arrested and held in Halifax. In May 1777, he and about 30 principal Tories were sent to a Philadelphia prison. Holt contrived to make interest with Congress. Release was granted to Holt and most native-born Americans (Symth in Hatch 1969:86). By 1780, he was home again and cooperated with local Whigs (Troxler 1999:86).

Michael, Jr.. was married twice, first to Margaret O'Neill by whom he had Joseph who moved to Kentucky; and two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, whose fate is not known; his second marriage was to Jean Lockhart in 1767, by whom he had: Sarah, who married John Harden; Joshua who married a Miss Burrow and moved to Kentucky; Isaac (Lockhart) Holt who married Lettie Scott; Mary who married Anthony Thompson; K(C)atherine who married Wm. Holt and moved to Tennessee; Michael III, who married Rachel Rainey, and William who married Sallie Steele.
Jean Lockhart (according to my data)was a daughter of Samuel Lockhart (1727-1784)and Catherine Bennett(1727-1792) both of Augusta County, VA. and North Carolina.

"MICHAEL HOLT (1723-1799) "Revolutionary Character." Born in Va., Moved to Orange county about 1740. Captain of county militia against Regulators. In 1776 answered Gov. Martin's call for loyalist (Tory) support, but after reaching Cross Creek (present-day Fayetteville) en route to Brunswick returned home. Arrested at home and imprisoned in Philadelphia. Released and returned to Orange county. Aided American cause by donating supplies."

"The History of Alamance", by: Miss S. W. Stockard, Raleigh: Capital Printing Company, 1900: CHAPTER VI., HOLT FAMILY, Pages 122-127:
"Michael Holt (Jr..) was the patriarch of the Holts in Alamance. He belonged to the Lutheran Church at St. Paul's, near Alamance Creek." "Mr. Holt was a wealthy planter, his land extending from Greensboro almost to Hillsboro, with his homestead about in the center, on the Great Alamance. "
"His friend Mr. Roan of Hillsboro once asked Mr. Holt how much he would take for his land. "Gold dollars, gold dollars, by ging," was the characteristic reply, "gold dollars enough to cover it and them laid down edgewise!" "But Michael Holt's love of land and money was not exceeded by his generosity. He was an agreeable and popular man, loved talking and fond of a joke. Mr. Henderson of Rowan was a great friend of his. Once his eighteen-miles-away neighbors decided to pay him a joke. They called and said his friend Henderson was being persecuted and was suffering want. Mr. Holt replied that no friend of his should suffer while he could help him out. So he filled his great old saddle pockets with money and set out for Rowan on horseback. After riding a mile or more he noticed a hole in his saddle-bags, and gold dollars dropped all along, as the horse had trotted pretty fast, a golden stream behind him."
"Michael Holt's home was a hotel on the Hillsboro and Salisburg road. They say he was a "good-feeder." He was a large slave-holder and agriculturist. Michael Holt, says LOSSING'S HISTORY, was a fine old Deutchman and a gentleman commanding great respect. He was buried on the Dr. Pleasant Holt place (his own land), near Burlington cemetery."

State of North Carolina Orange County
In the Name of God, Amen! I, Michael Holt, of the said State & County, being advanced in age and infirm, but of perfect memory, thanks be unto God, but calling to mind the uncertainty of my life and that it is appointed for all men once to die, and therefore such property or estate as it hath pleased God to bestow on me in this life, I give, demise, and dispose of in the following manner and form: ____
First it is my will and desire that my loving wife shall have the use or service of one negro man by the name Jim the younger ____, also one negroe girl by the name of Barbara and also two horses, such as she may choose from the stock, also one waggon, two cows and such household furniture as she may point out and apply to her use, and further it is my will and desire that my said wife shall live and occupy my dwelling house on the manor plantation during her natural life and enjoy all the above named property without molestation, and at her death the said property to be apptd as hereafter directed.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving son Joseph Holt, fifty dollars to be raised out of my estate and to be paid unto the said Joseph by my executors hereafter named.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving daugher Margaret Powell ten dollars to be paid to her or her heirs by my executors, forty dollars being advanced and paid by me hertofore, which makes an equivalent sum with my son Joseph as above.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving daughter Elizabeth Smith ten dollars, to be paid unto her or her heirs by my executors, forty dollars being advanced and paid by me hertofore, and in consequence thereof makes an equal dividend to my first children by my first wife.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving Sarah Harden, one negroe fellow by the name of Lewis, also one negroe wench by the name of Patt with her increase, unto the said Sarah, her heirs & assigns forever, also such articles as has been delivered heretofore. I give and bequeath unto the said Sarah, viz: one horse, one cow & calf, one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs as aforesaid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving son Joshua Holt, one negroe fellow by the name of Adam, also one negroe girl by the name of Heaster with her increase, unto the said Joshua, his heirs and assigns forever, also the following articles heretofore delivered, viz: one horse, one cow and calf, one feather bed and furniture, I give and bequeath to my said son Joshua & his heirs, etc., as aforesaid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving son Isaac Holt one negroe fellow by the name of Abram, also one negroe girl by the name of Bet, with her increase unto the said Isaac, his heirs and assigns for ever and further I give and bequeath the following articles heretofore delivered, viz: one horse, one cow and calf, one feather bed and furniture unto him the said Isaac, his heirs, etc., as aforesaid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving daughter Mary Thompson one negroe girl by the name of Rachel with her increase, also one negroe boy by the name of Ambrose, unto the said Mary, her heirs and assigns forever and further I give and bequeath the following articles heretofore delivered, viz: one horse, one cow and calf, one feather bed & furniture, unto the said Mary, her heirs , etc., as aforesaid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving daughter Katherine Holt one negroe wench by the name of Sarah, also one negroe girl by the name of Ann with their increase, unto the said Katherine, her heirs and assigns forever. And also the following articles heretofore delivered, viz: one horse, one cow and calf, one feather bed and furniture I give and bequeath the same to my said daughter Katherine, her heirs, etc., as aforesaid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving son Michael Holt one negroe fellow by the name of Charles, also one negroe girl by the name of Mary with her increase, unto the said Michael, his heirs and assigns forever, as also the following articles heretofore delivered, viz: one horse, one cow and calf, one feather bed and furniture. I give and bequeath the same to my said son Michael, his heirs, etc., as aforesaid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving son William Holt the manor plantation whereon I now live, containing four hundred thirty acres [reserving the use of the house and so much of the land as my loving wife Jean may think sufficient for her cultivation and support during her natural life] and at her death it is my will and desire that my son William shall inherit the said plantation, and further I give and bequeath unto my said son William one negroe boy by the name of Jerry and one negroe wench by the name of Suke with her increase and the plantation as above mentioned at the death of my loving wife Jean, unto him, the said William, his heirs and assigns forever, also one set of blacksmith's tools, one young mare, one cow & calf, one feather bed and furniture, and my will and desire is that each and every article mentioned in favour of my loving wife, which she is to possess and enjoy during her life, shall and is hereby given and bequeathed to my son William at her death.
Item: I hereby declare it to be my will and desire that what of my stock there may be at my death and not herein bequeathed shall be equally divided amongst my children herein named, viz: Sarah Harden, Joshua Holt, Isaac Holt, Mary Thompson, Catherine Holt, Michael Holt and William Holt, and that the word stock may be fully understood. I hereby say horses, cattle, sheep and hogs, and it is further my will and desire that whatever negroes I may have at my death and not herein bequeathed, it is my will and desire that they shall be valued by my executors afterwards named, or that they appoint good and respectable men in the neighbourhood to place a value thereon and my above named seven children as last mentioned to draw whether they will give so much money or take such negroes agreeable to the said valuation.
Item:It is my will and desire thay my loving wife Jean be my executrix and that my loving sons Joshua & Isaac Holt should act as my executors to this my last will and testament, revoking and disannulling all and every other will heretofore made by me. Declaring this and this only to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 23rd day of Jan 1790.
