elected as the first justice of the new county of Cumberland in 1749 and was Burgess from Cumberland 1765-1771 along with Thomas Jefferson. Known as Alex of "Barterhill", Cumberland County on willis river and Manchester.

Purchased land in Henrico, Goochland, albermarle, amelia, Amherst, Fluvanna, Prince Edward , Bedford, Campbell, Patrick, and Henry Counties with inhereitance from his father. Along with jis brother Peterfield.
