Notes for John P. Arthur: Passenger Lists: New Orleans, 1820-1850 (CD#358, Family Tree Maker) shows a "John Arthurs" and his family arriving in New Orleans, LA on December 28, 1848 on the Scottish ship Forfarshire that had sailed from Liverpool, England. The ship's register shows John Arthurs, age 30, his wife Mary, age 30, son Francis, daughter Bridget and son Thomas. Two other Arthurs were listed, an Anne Arthur, age 32 and James, age 20. The family group also included a Dennis Healy, age 20 who showed the same family number. Although this record shows that they arrived in New Orleans on 12/28/1848 we believe that this could have been the date they left Liverpool as the dates coincide with dates recorded and handed down by family historians (see Bess Gutman's letter). John and family traveled to Baltimore, probably on one of the ships that traveled between these two cities in that time. The New Orleans Historical Society told me that there were many ships that went back and forth during those times but the records were not kept. We can pick up the family in 1853 when the Baltimore Sun recorded John Arthur's death on March 7, 1853 at 57 Orleans Street, Baltimore. The following in an excerpt from the paper of March 8, 1853: "On the morning of the 7th instant, in the 36th year of his age, John Arthur, a native of County Clare, Ireland. May he rest in peace". The records of St Patrick's Church, Fells Point records show that he was buried in St Patrick's Cemetery yard. Mary died in 1871 and was also buried in St Patrick's Cemetery. There bodies were later moved to New Cathedral Cemetery (St. Patrick's section). The Arthurs also lived at 71 Potter Street. (The name Potter was changed to Chestnut St and is now Colvin St) In 1856 Mary Arthur still lived at 57 Orleans St. By 1856-57 she had moved to 73 Chestnut St. Chestnut St was later developed for the BGE complex on Hillen St. (Source Baltimore City directories) A story about John's life was reported by Edna Mount who told me that he was known to have shepherded sheep on the grassy pasture around the Court House in downtown Baltimore. (See interview with Edna Mount, daughter of Anna Marie Frist who was a daughter of John's daughter Margaret Ann Frist)
1851-1852 Bal City Directory: Arthur, John rear 106 Dugan's wharf ( This may or may not be our ancestor but is the only reference close to the information at hand and may be useful to future genealogists.
