ARTHUR
The Arthur family emigrated from Ireland to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1848 (28 Dec 1848) aboard the Scottish ship Forfarshire, that sailed from Liverpool, England. The family had its origins in County Clare, Ireland. The Arthur surname is well known in that area as well as in the City of Limerick. John and his wife and three children were listed in the ship register under the name "Arthurs". How they came to Baltimore is not known at this time but we find that John Arthur was listed in the 1850 Baltimore City Directory. John died in 1853 of Typhoid Pneumonia at age 36 but his wife, Mary Maroney, lived until 1874. Both were buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery yard in East Baltimore. Their bodies were later moved to the St. Patrick’s Section of the New Cathedral Cemetery in West Baltimore. Their oldest child, John Thomas,who was born in Ireland,was a coach painter and then became a policeman in Baltimore City. The second child,also born in Ireland, Elizabeth, married Louis Frederick and lived on Oak Hill Street where they ran a grocery store. The third child who was also born in Ireland was Francis (Frank) who left home at the outbreak of the Civil War and joined the Confederate army in Tennessee. He died in the Old Soldiers Home in Richmond, VA. in 1930. A fourth child, Margaret Ann, was born in Baltimore on Hawk Street. She married John Frist who was a blacksmith on York Road in Govans. I am a direct descendant of John Thomas Arthur. He and his wife Sarah Dormady had seven children and many of them were at one time or another in the grocery business. My grandfather was George W. Arthur, the fifth child of J. Thomas and Sarah. My father was the son of George and Margaret Kelly Arthur.
KELLY
The Kelly’s of Baltimore are descendants of Thomas Kelly and Hannah Clark. Thomas came from County Lough, Ireland and Hannah came from County Down, Ireland. Family folklore tells of Thomas and Hannah coming to Philadelphia separately and then marrying there. The 1860 US Census for Maryland shows Thomas and Hannah living in Baltimore in the 5th Ward. The Census shows that they had two children at the time, Mary, age 3, and Thomas, age 1. The Census record indicates that the children were born in Maryland. Family history tells us that Mary Jane and Thomas were born in Philadelphia. In the 1880 US Census Thomas and Annie have eight children. John, age 18, is listed as living at home with rheumatism. He later died in 1881 and is buried in New Cathedral Cemetery. Thomas Kelly had a fashionable Shoe shop on Centre Street in Baltimore. An 1896 Baltimore City Directory lists Thomas Kelly as a Shoemaker at 111 E. Centre. Four large Baltimore families, Arthur, Kelly, Lacey and Holden are descendants of Thomas and Hannah Clark.
CASHEN
The Cashen family came to this country from CO Tipperary, Ireland. There were twelve children born to Thomas and Mary Maher Cashen. Four came to Baltimore; two went to St. Louis, one to New Orleans, and one to New York. The rest remained in Ireland. The Cashen family of Baltimore now has branches in Alabama,California,Florida, Kansas, Virginia, New York, Utah, Washington, Georgia and Iowa.
Further Research
More research needs to be done in Ireland concerning the Arthur and Maroney families. All signs point to the fact that they came from CO Clare and a place called Glenomera! We know nothing of the Kelly’s in Philadelphia or their passage to America from Ireland.
