ARTUS NAME I have not been able to trace the origin of the name. In many old records it is, of course, spelt in a variety of ways including Artis, Hartis. P H Reaney's "Directory of Surnames" offers Artoys (1327), Artes (1524), Arteis (1568), Artis (1674) and Artus (1724).
There is speculation that the name might derive from "Man of Artois" - Huguenots?
Adrian West says that the original Artus was spelled d'Artois the family came from France, and settled at Burton-on0Trent on the east coast in the south of England. Their trade was that of pottery makers.
Cyndy Bauer stated that she and her husband Wil, visited the grave site, and three people were buried in the same grave. Not the same lot, but the same hole.
Cyndy's notes of conversations with her Grandmother (Emily Mina Artus) indicated the following:
1. William Charles Artus married Alice Moore when he was 32 years of age and she was 25 years old.
2. It is thought that he was born in 1860. (Perhaps 1858)
3. William Charles Artus painted Buckingham Palace.
4. Herbert Edward Artus (Died 4-28-1910) and Ethel Mary Beatrice Leech (Died 8-14-1965) are buried in the same grave as William Charles Artus. To date, I have not been able to trace where these people fit into the Family Tree.
5. The unmarked grave site is located in Grave Section A-1 No. 184 in the Borough of Cheltenham Cemetery - Bouncers Lane, Cheltenham, GL52 5JT, England. Phone: 44245
