Emily Mina Artus (daughter of William Charles Artus and Emily Ann Hawkes) was born 29 Oct 1886 in Swindon, Wilshire, England, and died 06 Jan 1981 in Albany, MO. She married Clarence Morton Williams on 12 Dec 1911 in Silver Springs, Colorado?, son of Maurine Ruffner Williams and Elizabeth V. Black.

Includes NotesNotes for Emily Mina Artus:
Since Emily did not drive, Sheila Artus used to take her for rides in the car. When Sheila would ask if she would like to go for a ride, Aunt Emily would be the first in the car. It is reported that Henry Charles"Harry" Artus once gave Emily a fur coat, that she felt uncomfortable wearing, (She said it was like putting a diamond saddle on a mule) so she gave it to Sheila.

Emily lived with her brother Henry Charles Artus, after the death of their spouses. She moved to Albany, MO to live with her son Harry and wife Irene, after the death of her brother. She kept house for them, while they worked their Western Auto business located in the same town.

In December of 1963, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but recovered from that in good shape. Later she had rectum cancer and was rather miserable, but still did most of the housework. Her last couple of years was spent in a nursing home, and Cyndy Bauer reports that Emily felt that it was a good place to live, but that she had no money. Even though there was no place to spend it, Cyndy would slip her a few dollars before she left, which made Aunt Emily feel more secure.

Emily died January 6, 1981 at the age of approximately. 94, in that nursing home.
Her Mother (Emily Hawkes) died of dropsy, when she was five years old.

Cyndy Bauer, Emily's Granddaughter, has a map of Emily's ship voyage to Canada(?) dated June 1, 1907. It was presented to Emily by the ship's Captain for being voted "Most Popular Girl" of the voyage.

Emily Mina Artus Williams was born in Swindon Wilshire England October 29, 1886. Moved a lot where her father (William Charles Artus) could find work.

William Charles Artus was born in Cheltenham England in Glouscestershire. He decorated Buckingham Palace. The family lived near there when Grammy was 12-14 years old while her dad worked on the Palace. William Charles was a foreman, a good-looking man--tall with wavy hair about the same color as mine (Cyndy). He died at age 63. Suffered with neuralgia (sp?)

Her mother, Emily Ann Hawkes, was born in Leamington which was known for its health spas. She died of dropsy when she was 29 years old. (Grammy was 5.) Grammy's baby sister Nellie Florence had died a few months earlier at age 3 of bronchitis.

Grammy went to an Episcopal school in Kensington England. They wore black dresses, no jewelry, hair back in a bow.

Grammy had an uncle (Harry Artus) in the marines stationed at the Rock of Gibraltar. Grammy saw him and his wife only once.

Grammy lived at the infirmary where she worked as an aide, about age 14, for a couple of years. Got a job at a hospital near London and got her diploma. Saw an ad wanting nurses in South Africa. Her father wouldn't allow it. She was almost 21 when she went to Canada to live with her brother Harry and his wife Martha.

When her father was 32, he married Alice Moore, age 25. She was very cruel to Harry and Grammy. They had a son Percy who died at age 1 1/2. Dolly was born about 1900. Grammy thought Dolly was "strange." When Grammy would go home from school for visits, Dolly would hide behind the door.

Alice Moore's younger sister was Beatrice Dyson (known as Aunt Sis). Husband was George Dyson. They had a son run over as a child. The boy stepped into the street, and a car hit him.
In 1976 Aunt Sis was living with her son Jack in Taos, New Mexico. Jack was the curator of an Indian museum. When Mom (Ethel Williams Walker) was a child, Jack spent some time with them one summer. (NOTE: I think I have his pix somewhere--ironically, when I saw that it was in NM, I assumed it was from my grandfather's (Clarence Williams) side of the family because he was from NM. I'll do some more digging on that.)

Dolly worked in a veterans hospital during World War I. She came to the U.S. when she was 22 and lived with Grammy's family at Hollister, Missouri. Dolly and Elwyn quarreled a lot. Dolly got a job out west and then went to live with Aunt Sis when she got pregnant. She put the baby up for adoption. She called the baby Rose. Dolly died at approximately age 40 of cancer.

In about 1928 Dolly and her husband came back from San Francisco to visit Grammy's family in Seymour, Missouri. Dolly and her husband wanted to live with them. Dolly was pregnant. They visited in Seymour three weeks, then went to Chicago. Dolly's husband had been a sailor. They had no money. Grammy gave her some dresses, Elwyn gave them the $12 he'd saved, and Clarence bought their train tickets to Chicago.

Dolly and Alice were cremated. Aunt Sis showed Grammy the vases and ashes in San Francisco.

(End of Notes from Grammy in 1976)

(Cyndy says:) I'll be bringing to the reunion pictures of the Cheltenham Cemetery. Also a copy of the card the lady in the cemetery office gave me showing there are THREE people buried in the same space--William Charles Artus (February 19, 1923), Herbert Edward Artus (April 28, 1910), and Ethel Mary Beatrice Leech (August 14, 1965).
