Dear Leon,

Surrounded by Artus stuff I wonder if the following is of interest to
you.

Ann Artus dau of Matthew/Ann of Eton Place, Chelt[bricklayer] bapt
Jan 1842; Joseph Robert son of Samuel/Catherine of Ivy Cottage
Chelt[plumber] bapt 9 Oct 1842; Catherine Artus 2 years of Chelt burial
27 Apr 1842. (These 3 items from Bishops Transcripts of Cheltenham - St
Mary's I guess}.

In 1841 Sml Artus/Catherine were at High Street, Chelt, in 1851 at
Townsend Street, Chelt & IN 1861 at 1 Sandford Street, Chelt - as
follows:- Sml head mar 45 plumber, Catherine wife 43 born Rodborough,
Joseph unm son 18 painter, Edward 16 painter, ?Ceaven F? 12, Emma 10,
Henry 7, Ada 3 all scholars & Francis 1 - father and children all bn
Chelt.

I think that Samuel may have died at Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire at
the age of 71 years - but this needs verifying.

I have this bit of info but I haven't recorded where I got it from.
Someone may have passed it on, i.e.

Widower, Samuel Artus, a self-employed plumber and painter, aged 62, of
Cheltenham, appeared in court on 16th October 1878, and pleaded guilty
to a charge of embezzlement. (Embezzled Charitable funds) Samuel, the father of eight children, was
sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour. Samuel's description..height 5ft 4 and a half inches, grey hair, grey eyes, oval face, fair complexion, lost 3 front teeth, 4
moles on left shoulder blade, left leg fractured below knee, stout
build. He was released from prison 15th October 1880. [This sounds as
though it has come from the Gaol Calendars at Glos. Record Office. If
so, they also say what the person's religion was and what their
character was and how they behaved themselves while in gaol and possibly
more details of the crime. Likewise that may be seen in an old newspaper
cutting for Chelt.]

One of Samuel's sons, also a Samuel, was reported as living a Roselyn Cottage, Frances Street, Bath
Road, Cheltenham.

Is this your family?! if so, don't despair, we all have a few stories to
tell! It's called "putting flesh on the bones".

Regards from Pam.
