| Welcome to the Descendants of William & Neomi Asbury Home Page. My name is James E. Asbury II, but most people just call me Jim. I live in West Virginia with my wife Debbie, and my daughters, Elizabeth, Caroline, and Victoria. I have been researching my family history for about ten years. When I'm not researching, I spend my free time riding four-wheelers, playing golf, watching sports, working around the house and spending time with family. I created this homepage to share Asbury research with other interested friends and family members Family Origins and a Brief History The surname Asbury is of English origin and means one who came from Ashbury (Aesc's fort; fort near Ash trees); or, the name of villages in Berkshire and Devonshire; or, from Astbury (eastern fort) in Cheshire. Other spelling variations include, Asberry, Asbery, Ashbury and even Assbury. According to the 1990 U.S. Census, Asbury is the 4118th most frequently used surname in the U.S. The earliest Asburys emigrated from England to the American Colonies in the early to mid 1660's. Among these pioneers was my 8th great-grandfather, Henry Asbury (Abt 1650-1707), who settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Many of the Asburys in the United States today are descendants of Henry. There is speculation by some Asbury Family researchers that the above Henry Asbury's father was Francis Asbury (not the bishop) who landed in Kent County, Maryland in 1665, but the evidence to support this notion is not certain. See related files link below for more about this topic. Through the years, Asburys migrated to every state in the Union. My ancestors lived in several different counties in the state of Virginia, notably Westmoreland, Stafford, Bedford, Kanawha, Logan and Boone. After the U.S. Civil War, Kanawha, Logan and Boone became counties in the new state of West Virginia. My grandfather, Charles Edward Asbury, was born in Logan County, West Virginia in 1917. His father, Ira Stanley Asbury (1881-1950) brought his family to Logan County after 1910 from neighboring Boone County, where my branch of the family had lived since about 1850. But, even going back as far as 1830, my 4th great-grandfather, William Asbury (1798-1895) appeared in the Logan County census of that year. William Asbury appeared sporadically in the Boone County census for the next 50 or so years, his whereabouts in question from time to time. His death was noted in the Boone County infirmary in 1895, where his age was listed as "unknown, but very old". It was my 3rd great-grandfather Joel Asbury (1830-1901), son of William Asbury who finally settled in Peytona, Boone County, (West) Virginia around 1850 and lived there until his death in 1901. Mrs. Claude S. Fowler wrote a very informative narrative about William Asbury found in "Kith & Kin of Boone County West Virginia, Volume II", published by the Boone County Genealogical Society, Madison, West Virginia.
