Find Family
Two Preston County, West Virginia sons of a Civil War veteran's widow sought riches in the gold fields of Colorado. One son stayed in Colorado while the other headed farther west. I am the only grandson of one of those boys, and I have endeavored to uncover more of our family history. With perhaps your help, I will get a bit closer. Please enjoy, and don't hesitate to prompt me with additions or even corrections.

The Civil War veteran, my GGF, was Joseph M Ashby and he died in Tunnelton, WV. His youngest son, James Herman Ashby, worked the mines and railroads in Colorado, marrying Elizabeth Sarwash there about 1895. They had four children, Joseph, Clyde Herman, Roy Marion & Geraldine Ashby. Clyde was my father and I was named after his two brothers, Joe & Roy. My only sibling was a sister Lona who, like myself, was born in Colorado. She died of cancer on my birthday in 1965. Where did my Ashby line come from? How about my fraternal grandmother's family, the Criss' from Preston County, WV. What about my maternal grandmother's family, the Sarwash'? Anton was from the Austro Hungarian Empire and his bride was from Germany, but who were their parents? How about my mother's side of the family, the Dawson's or Browns from Lima,OH?
