Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM¹ BOWIE was born Abt. 1830 in Scotland, and died Unknown in Unknown. He married JANE ELLEN DAVIES April 28, 1859 in Singapore. She was born March 12, 1841 in Wales, and died April 06, 1913 in Trenton.

Notes for WILLIAM BOWIE:
The Bowie family bible indicates that there were two children born prior to William's marriage to Jane Ellen indicating that there may have been a first marriage. Those children are William Clark Bowie, born 08/12/1848 and Isabella, born 08/08/1850. There is no evidence concerning a mother of these children and it is only supposition that they are children of William. Their place of birth is listed as Southampton.

I have found a listing in the IGI for a christening of a William Bowie on 7/19/1929 at Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland. The parents are listed as Walter Bowie and Henrietta Locke. The dates coincide so it is a possible match.

Notes for JANE ELLEN DAVIES:
Jane Ellen is buried in the Elshove plot with her son, Robert D. Her name on the stone is Bowie but the Riverview office records indicate "Johnson". Re-marriage-probably not. In the 1910 census she was living with John Elshove and her daughter, Jannie and son, Robert. She was 64, had three children (all living) and could read and write English. Her date of immigration was 1882 and her parents were both born in England (Wales?). Although the census lists her age as 64 that is probably off by a few years as she was married in 1859 per the bible which appears to be accurate considering birth dates of children.

Update from her death certificate (12/01): The name is listed as Jane E. Johnson, widowed, daughter of David Davies. She was 72 years, 25 days making her birth date 3/12/1841. (This is more in keeping with the rest of the information.) She was living at 1205 Anderson at the time of her death from "senile decay". The informant was Jane Elshove.

Marriage Notes for WILLIAM BOWIE and JANE DAVIES:
I have posted the following note on the Scots ancestor site:

This branch of the Bowie family appears to have been quite mobile. William & Jane were married in Singapore on 4/28/1859 but I have evidence that they had ties to Renfrewshire, Scotland. Note: a card found in the family bible states on the back: Mrs. Bowie passenger to Johnstone Refrewshire Scotland. There are no dates and the front of the business card reads J. Dick & Co.

It is also possible that William was married previously as there are children mentioned in the family bible who were born on 8/12/1848 (William Clark Bowie) and 8/8/1850 (Isabella)-both in Southampton.

The youngest child (Robert's sister), Jane Ellen was born in Welsh Pool on 11/4/1866, while Robert and John were both born in Singapore.
