Descendants of William Bowie

Generation No. 3

4. ROBERT WILLIAM3 BOWIE (ROBERT DAVIES2, WILLIAM1) was born January 31, 1885 in Chambersburg (Trenton), and died August 12, 1929 in Trenton. He married (1) JULIA COLE DISBROW November 26, 1903 in Camden, NJ, daughter of JAMES DISBROW and MARGARET. She was born 1887 in New Jersey, and died Unknown. He married (2) GERTRUDE DARR November 15, 1913. She was born 1890 in Pennsylvania, and died Unknown.

Notes for R
OBERT WILLIAM BOWIE:
Robert W. Bowie first shows up in the 1900 Census at age 15. He appears in the Trenton City Directory in 1906, as living at home at 408 Genesee Street and was a painter . In 1910 he was still at painter living at 1133 E. State and in 1913 he was still a painter boarding at 207 Lamberton St. and does not appear in the 1916 directory. In 1914 he was living at 3305 Powelton Avenue, Philadelphia. In 1920 census, he was living with Gertrude and their 10 month old son, Robert W. Jr. in the household of his brother, Albert for whom he worked as a laborer. In the 1925 Phila. City Directory he and Gertrude (and John & Mame) were living with Sarah at 4618 Kingsessing. The family bible has his death as 08/12/1929. His obituary lists his address as 4823 Kingsessing Avenue, West Philadelphia. Burial was in Arlington Cemetery. He was apparently living with his mother at the time of his death as the funeral was held from her house at the same address.

There are two marriages listed for Robert in the bible. One is written in the bible and gives the name Gertrude Darr on 11/15/1913. It appears that they moved from Trenton to Philadelphia, at least temporarily, after the marriage.

On the back of a business card of his father's is handwritten "Robert William Bowie and Julia Cole Disbrow married Nov 26 1903 in Camden, NJ"

4/01-(12th Ward, ed 93, pg 143a) the 1910 census has him living with Julia at 1133 E. State St. He was 25 and she 23 and it was a first marriage for both. They has been married for 5 years (?) and were renting. They could both read and write English and he was a painter on the railroad. They had a five year old daughter living (out of 2 births). Question: could Thelma (1903) have been their first child born before their marriage? See notes under Robt. D for 1920 census. Ironically, the name is still not legible in the 1920 census where Julia is living with her parents and daughter (ED 100, pg 7a)

The 1920 census list a Thelma Bowie, age 16, born in NJ as a prisoner in the Hudson Co. Jail. Both of her parents were born in NJ.

6. STELLA CRESLAR3 BOWIE (ROBERT DAVIES2, WILLIAM1) was born November 10, 1893 in Trenton, NJ, and died November 19, 1961 in Trenton, NJ. She married THOMAS F. NOLAN, JR. Abt. 1913 in Trenton, NJ or Philadelphia, Pa, son of THOMAS NOLAN and LAURA WAGNER. He was born August 11, 1892 in Trenton, NJ, and died October 19, 1964 in Hightstown, NJ.

Notes for S
TELLA CRESLAR BOWIE:
Family history always had Stella being born in Philadelphia but the 1900 Census indicates that she was born in NJ. Apparently she went to live in Philadelphia with her mother when she was in her late teens and she and Tom may have married there as I am unable to find a marriage certificate for them in NJ. Their oldest daughter was born in Trenton in September 1914 so they most likely lived there their entire married life.

During WW II all four of her sons were in the service and she received an Emblem of Honor from Trenton's Mayor Hartman. She was a quiet woman who whistled softly all the time. Grandmother, as we all called her, was the disciplinarian when all the Nolan clan got together every Sunday in Hightstown, NJ. My fondest memories of her include nights spent at their house and her wonderful cooking, especially her pot roast and hamburgers! She suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died shortly thereafter.

Notes for T
HOMAS F. NOLAN, JR.:
Tom Nolan attended Notre Dame University from 1906-1908. He returned to Trenton where he married Stella Bowie and raised five children. For his entire adult life he lived in the same home which was attached to the grocery store he ran until shortly before his last illness. He was the patriarch of the family and many of his children and grandchildren visited every Sunday with him at his daughter, Eleanore Shuman's home in Hightstown, NJ.

Writer was unable to locate a marriage certificate for Tom & Stella so it may be that they were married in Philadelphia. More research will follow. Also, he first appeared in City Directory in 1916 (He had already been married for approximately 3 years and had Eleanore by then). From 1916-18, he was listed as a clerk living at 197 Humboldt. He didn't appear in the 1919 book and by 1920 was living at 169 Pennington.
