Descendants of James Connor

4. ELLEN2 CONNOR (JAMES1) was born 1832 in Ireland, and died May 10, 1905 in Trenton. She married MATTHEW DUGAN Aft. 1850. He was born 1820 in Ireland, and died Aft. 1882 in Trenton.

Notes for E
LLEN CONNOR:
As late as 1900 Ellen was listed as a widow of Matthew living at 101 Bellevue. None of the children were with her. The 1900 census has an Ellen Dugan in the NJ State Hospital, born in Ireland, marital status unknown but her age is 41. I found her obituary in the Sunday Times Advertiser on 5/14/1905 stating she had been buried the previous day (no exact date of death). She was widely known in the Cathedral parish and James is the only son mentioned (hotel keeper on Hanover Street) but a William Dugan sent a floral arrangement. There is no mention at all of Matthew. In 1900 James is listed as "hotel" at 28 E. Hanover. In 1920, there were numerous Dugans many living on Second street.

Update 11/01: I have a copy of Ellen's death certificate dated 5/10/1905 which lists her age as 73 and her address as 101 Bellevue. She was widowed, had lived in NJ for 50 years and was born in Ireland. Her parents names were as James Conners (sic) and Ann Conners (Catherine?).

Marriage Notes for E
LLEN CONNOR and MATTHEW DUGAN:
They lived in Trenton, NJ and she was still Ellen Connor in 1850 when she acted as godmother to James, son of Ann & Martin.

The 1870 census (pg 330, 2nd Ward) lists Matthew (50, a laborer, Ireland, real estate $1,600), Ellen (48), Elizabeth (12), Margaret (10), William (8), James (6) and Matthew (4). All of the children except for Elizabeth were born in NJ. She was born in NY.

Mathew & Ellen were living at 101 Higbee (ed 109, pg 450 or 54 of 57 in Ancestry.com) in the 1880 census. Both were born in Ireland. The children were James (16), William (18) & Mathew (14). He was 66 and she 57. He was a laborer and the boys all "work in pottery" and were born in NJ.

In the City Directories: 1859 Matthew was living at Reservoir n Pennington as a laborer; In 1881 & 1882 he was living at 101 Bellevue under the name Duge. Matthew Jr first appears in 1882 also as Duge and living at home. There are two James (laborer at 662 Lamberton and saloon at Bellevue n Calhoun) and two Williams (potter bds at 245 Clay and beer saloon at 108 Bellevue.) The second scenario for both seems more possible because of the proximity to their parents although they were potters in 1880.

Children of E
LLEN CONNOR and MATTHEW DUGAN are:
  i.   ELIZABETH3 DUGAN, b. 1858, New York; d. Unknown.
  ii.   MARGARET DUGAN, b. 1859; d. October 13, 1859, Trenton, NJ.
  Notes for MARGARET DUGAN:
Found by accident: death ledger notice directly below that of her uncle, Martin Nolan. She was the infant daughter of Matthew & Ellen Dugan.

  iii.   MARGARET DUGAN, b. 1860; d. Unknown.
  Notes for MARGARET DUGAN:
In 1920, Charles and Margaret Hoffman were living at 101 Bellevue the home where Ellen Dugan lived in 1905 at the time of her death. This is a possible daughter as the age is exactly correct (60). Husband is 69 and the manager in a feed mill. Margaret's parents were both born in Ireland. In the 1900 city durectory there is a Charles Hoffmann listed at 90 Pennington Avenue as "saloon". In 1920 directory the name is Charles Miller Hoffman.

iv.   WILLIAM DUGAN, b. 1862, New Jersey; d. Unknown.
  Notes for WILLIAM DUGAN:
Found A William F. Dugan married to Katie (?) with two sons, James F. Jr (12) and George (6). They had been married 15 years. Ages appear to be 44 and 35. It is extrememly faded and hard to read. He was a brass finisher in an iron mill. This same James shows in the 1920 city directory and his son, James F., Jr. appears as well (as a photographer). George L. is at same address as a brassworker.

  v.   JAMES DUGAN, b. 1864, Trenton; d. Aft. 1905.

Marriage Notes for E
LIZA CONNOR and JOHN CONROY:
They lived in Millvale, Pa (Allegheny Co.) in 1883. In the 1880, I found them in Millvale Borough (ED 39, pg 26, #209). John was 62 (@1818) and Eliza was 51 (@1829). There were eight children listed ranging in age from 26 to 11. John worked in an iron mill as did all five sons. Both John & Eliza were born in Ireland. The two oldest children listed were born in NJ where they must have lived circa 1854-1855. The rest of the children were born in PA, the first of which was @1859. Approximate birth dates for all were taken from this census.

Coincidentally, there was a John & Eliza Conroy listed in the Trenton 1880 census living next door to Patrick Nolan.

I also found a listing for John in the 1870 IAS Index in Millvale (pg. 202). Additionally, there was an Elis in Millvale (pg 209).

The 1859 city directory has a John "Conway" listed as a laborer at Spring N Calhoun
