WILL OF WILLIAM ASHLEY OF CHOWAN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA -
1782

In the name of God amen. I William Ashley Sen. being sick and weak
but of sound memory do take this opportunity to make this my last
will and testament. First I recommend my soul to God that gave it
and body to the Earth from whence it came to be decently buryed
after the discretion of my Executors and as to such worldly goods as
it hath been pleased God to bless me with dispose of in manner and
form following----------------------------------------------------I
leave to my beloved wife Hannah Ashley during her natural life the
third part of my plantation whereon I now live. Likewise I give to
my said wife one bed and furniture, one chest, one pot, three puter
bacon, one puter dish, one putor plate, and four spoons, two chairs,
one table---------------------I give and bequeath to my two sons
Media Ashley and Jeremiah Ashley the plantation whereon I now live
together with all the Land these unto belong to be Equally divided
between my two said sons Media and Jeremiah the part where I now
live to be for Jeremiah and the part where Media livith to be for
his part to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Likewise I
give to my son Jeremiah one bad and furniture and likewise I give to
my son Media Ashley my hand mill and all the remaining part of my
Estate after just debts being paid I will and desire it may be
Equally devided among all my children to whit my son William, my son
Media, my son Jeremiah, my daughter Milly Ellis, my daughter Mary,
my daughter Beth, and my daughter Margaret Ashley excepting one sow
and pigs, one lining wheel and meat and corn for my wifes years
provision which sow and pigs and linning wheel with the meat and
corn I give to my said wife. Lastly I do appoint on this (or confide
on this) and ordain my son Jeremiah and Evened Garnet Executors to
this my last will and testament and no other in witheth where of I
have hasten to did my hand and seal this 12th day of December 1782.
