Find Family

Jerome Ashby & Eldora Kennington - Iowa, Illinois & Maryland

Updated April 14, 2006

My mother asked me to help look up a few family puzzles for her and my interest is still growing. We are researching the families of: AINSWORTH, ASHBY, BISCHOFF, CROOKER, ELLIOTT, HEMINGWAY, HOWARD, KENNINGTON, LAWS, McDONALD, MORRIS, MUNFORD, SAGE, SNYDER & TAGNEY; just to mention a few.

Our biggest hurdle thus far was trying to locate Jerome Ashby. We found he and Eldora Mae Kennington were married in Newton, Iowa in 1885 by the marriage license application and he is listed as Jerome N Ashby. We found the newspaper article on microfilm covering their wedding in Newton, but the page was turned up and only Eldora's information was readable. They removed to Chicago, time unknown, and their son Harry LaZane Ashby was born, 1891. Shortly thereafter Jerome and Eldora separated or divorced and Harry grew up not knowing anything about his father except his name. We have no idea how he and Eldora met. There are no records of their divorce in Iowa or Illinois.

We found his parents are Jesse J Ashbey & Hannah Morgan

Then we found the Iowa Census of 1885 which showed Jerome, Dora & Eva (his 14 year-old daughter) living in Iowa. From there we found him in the 1880 Federal Census in Cawker City, Mitchell Co, Kansas married to Maggie J (Margaret) Bryson and having three children: Lillie, John & Evaline. We found he and Maggie were married 30 Dec 1865 in Washington, Iowa. Can't find any record of Maggie dying or any idea why he and Dora separated or where Jerome died or is buried.

The last census we can find him on is the 1900 Census, Swanton Election District 1, Garrett, Maryland listed as a boarder. Any help or suggestions are most welcomed.

Would be happy to trade information with any related branches! Happy Hunting!!!
