4. THOMAS3 ATCHLEY (JOSHUA2, THOMAS1) was born 03 May 1755 in VA, and died 11 Oct 1836 in Tennessee. He married LYDIA RICHARDS, daughter of WILLIAM RICHARDS and ABIGAIL LAY. She was born 18 Aug 1762, and died 31 Aug 1850 in Tennessee.

HOMAS ATCHLEY:
He was a Revolutionary War soldier. When but 20 years of age, he enlisted during the Fall of 1775 in the Colonial Army and served for one month as a private in Major John Dunn's Filrst Regiment, Middlesex County Militia.
While a resident of Loudoun County, Virginia, he enlisted in the Fall of 1777 and served six months as a private in Captain Reddakin's Virginia Company.
1780 -- He married Lydia Richards in Loudoun Co., Virginia.
1781 -- While a resident of Botetourt County, Virginia, he enlisted and served one month as a private in Captain John Lewis' Virginia Company of Botetourt County Regiment; then enlisted again in the same year and served two weeks (officers not named), making in all four enlistments during the Revolutionary War if we count the enlistment in New Jersey during 1775 (which, of course, was prior to the time of general rebellion).
1786 -- After harvest time, Thomas Atchley, his wife, and their three small daughters left Botetourt County, Virginia, bound for the fertile land located on Alder Branch, a tributary of French Broad River, in the new Sevier County, State of Franklin.
1794 -- He also served in the Indian War of 1794.
1830 -- He founded the Alder Branch Baptist Church, Sevier Co., TN, and donated the land for the church and cemetery.
1836 Oct 11 -- He died at his home located in Alder Branch community north of Sevierville, in Sevier County, Tennessee. He was a farmer by occupation.
Pension Application: Rev. War Soldier Thomas Atchly. Application # is W-257:NJ&VA/TN. Thomas Atchley, Sevier County, Private, New Jersey Line, $28.22 Annual Allowance, $84.22 Amount Received, August 2, 1833 Pension Started, Age 79.
Buried in Alder Branch Cemetery, Sevier Co., Tennessee.
Tombstone: Thomas Atchley 1756 1837 A Soldier of the Indepence of the Colonies. One of the Founders of Alder Branch Church, organized in his Dwelling House in 1830.

Revolutionary War pension claim W. 267 shows her birthdate as 18 Aug 1762
In a letter dated March 29, 1927, from the U. S. Government General Accounting Office, Washington, Records Devision File No. R-PDF-338, it is stated that the following children survived the death of Lydia Richards Atchley, whose death occurred Aug. 31, 1850: Hannah, Mary, Sarah, Isaac, Benjamin, Josiah, Lydia, Thomas, Jane, Elizabeth, Rhoda and Noah Atchley.
