Construction for the current St. Anthony Church began in 1890 after the original wood-frame church became too small to serve the steadily growing congregation of Polish immigrants coming into the Toledo area.

My great grand-grandparents, Mary Anna Zielinski Jagla and her husband Michael Jagla were part of the founding group who raised funds to build the new church. Michael was killed in 1892. She later married his brother Andrew who continued to support the church.

Mary Anna Zielinski Jagla, Michael Jagla and Andrew Jagla were buried in consecrated ground in Calvary Cemetery.

Completed in 1894, St. Anthony was the second Polish church built in Toledo and became known as the "mother" church for the local Polish community serving as many as 8,000 parishioners prior to the 1970s. The first Mass was celebrated on March 4, 1894.

My grandparents, Pauline Jagla and Jacob Michalski were married at St. Anthony on June 29, 1909.

St. Anthony Church served an area known as "Kuschwantz" or cow's tail, possibly referring to the rural nature of the area at the time. This area became the initial settlement for a large number of Polish immigrants from the Poznan area of Poland during the late 1800s.

St. Anthony ‘s Parish history is the story of an oppressed immigrant people building a new life of freedom; of a church preserving and embellishing a Christian heritage; of a school training an industrious, thrifty, and self-sacrificing citizenry. It is, in miniature, the story of the building of America.

Witness to their wedding Anthony Joseph Biskupski lists his mother's maiden name as Zielinski!
