Generation No. 4

7. MARSHALL L.4 FRANKS (NEHEMIAH3, ROBERT2 FRANK, ROBERT1) was born
November 05, 1752 in Ludenburg. Co. Va., and died January 13, 1840 in
Tabernacle Methodist Church Picken County Ala.. He married MARTHA 1776 in
Pickens, SC..

Notes for MARSHALL L. FRANKS:
Following is what Kate Savage wrote:
Marshall Franks was born on November 5, 1752 at Charlotte County, Virginia,
the son of Nehemiah and Mary Peake Franks. He served in the Continental Army
during the Revolutionary War from the 96th District of South Carolina. His
wife's name is believed to be Martha, (?) b c. 1755-1759, d c. 1800-1810 in
Laurens Co SC, married c.1778. Three of twelve children of Marshall Franks
were born in Fayette Co AL c.1793, 1794, and 1800. One child was born in
Monroe Co MS c1796, and one was born in Lowndes Co MS in 1798. His wife died
in Laurens Co. SC before 1810. After his wife died, he moved to Giles County
Tennessee (after the war, between 1810 and 1819), then moved to Monroe
County Mississippi (that part of Monroe County is now Lowndes County) prior
to September 1820, with (at least) Martin, Gabriel, and Jonathon. Some of
his children remained in Giles County TN. Marshall Franks is listed in the
1820 federal census of "the Monroe County, Mississippi area." His household
at that time consisted of himself, one male more than 26 years of age, and
one female and two males more than 16 and less than 26 years of age. He
entered land on November 16, 1822 in Section 14, Township 18S, Range 17W, in
Monroe (later Lowndes) County Mississippi. Federal land records show that
Marshall Franks purchased land in Pickens County, Alabama on November 16,
1822 (Township 18S, Range 17W, SW 1/4 of Section 13), and on March 1, 1833
(Township 18S, Range 17W, W 1/2 of E 1/2 of Section 12). This is the
second-most NW section of Pickens County, at the NW corner of Pickens
County, near Lamar County, Alabama and the Mississippi state line. Marshall
Franks was enumerated at Pickens County, Alabama for the 1830 federal
census. The 1830 federal census lists in his household two females between
15 and 20 years of age. He deeded land to the Tabernacle Methodist Church,
which still exists in Pickens County Alabama, just across the state line
from Lowndes County Mississippi on the Alabama extension of the Columbus
Mississippi Tabernacle Road off Hiway 50 East of Columbus. Marshall Franks
died on December 10, 1839 at Pickens County, Alabama and is buried at the
Tabernacle Methodist Church Cemetery.

Notes for SPENCER ATKINS:
I don't know where these specific people came from, but I can tell you what
I know about where the Atkins family originated. We came from the Scottish
Border regions. The name Atkins is actually thought to be of an English
origin, but the border between Scotland and England changed so often that
many Celtic name origins are blurry. Supposedly, the Atkins family is shown
in some ancient manuscripts as tracing their ancestry to Strathclyde, Briton
origin, but I've never seen proof of that. The Atkins family does appear in
the records of Lanarkshire, Scotland where they were recorded as an ancient
Lanarkshire family before the year 1100. The spelling and pronunciation has
changed over the centuries, (Aitken, Atkin, Adkins, Atkinson, etc.) The
Atkins family was affiliated with many different clans through marriage,
however, the Clan Gordon claims the Atkins family as a Sept, or directly
affiliated family, entitled to all clan rights including the use of the clan
tartan. (Yes.that means you can wear a Kilt.) There's a lot of great
information on the Clan Gordon on the Internet.

James 14.

1860 Census, Fayette Co., AL - p. 263. Spencer, Milly and James (and his
wife Harriet and two children Mary F. & Silinia).

1870 Census, Sanford Co., AL. Spencer does not show up, but Milly is shown
in household of Joel, her son.

So who are the 4 unknown children and 1 unknown female living with Spencer &
Milly in 1840? It could be Sarah (she married in 1835), it would not be
Martha Anne (her first child was born in 1842). We don't know enough about
Matilda and Mary Ann to know, except that Mary Ann should not be old enough
to have several children in 1840 since our "best guess" is that her dob is
around 1829 (note that there were not any known children between William C.
and Alexander. The three youngest children are probably grandchildren since
none of them appear in the following Census of 1850!

8. LETTY4 FRANKS (NEHEMIAH3, ROBERT2 FRANK, ROBERT1) was born November 30,
1758 in Ludenberg Va., and died February 1817 in Ludenberg Va.. She married
ANDREW ROGERS 1794.

Notes for LETTY FRANKS:
Clarke, "Letty" Franks was a daughter of Nehemiah Franks, Sr. and sister of
Marshall Franks. She was born (according to my file) Nov 30, 1758. I also
show Andrew Rodgers middle name as Stewart, but cannot tell where that came
from.

Now, "Lettice" Franks was a daughter of Marshall and wife of John Ross (some
say "Rop"). She was born Dec 8, 1785. "Lettice" was the way Marshall spelled
her name in his will.

Hope this helps clear up the spelling of these two different women.
