Eddy Rebellion notes from Cousin Tony GaglianiOur great great great grandfather Benjamin Allen fought in The Eddy Rebellion. While looking through some papers I had collected; I found an interesting excerpt from the Diary of John Thomas regarding Benjamin Allen. John Thomas had kept a Diary of events concerning the British action against the Acadian French in Nova Scotia. It reads:"July 12, 1755, "Pleasant day this day. Doc Whitworth, Kast Frenchwell and Veal hold a consultation on a man wounded in the feet, and take off one of his legs at Camp. He belongs to Captain Lampson and his name is Allen and he came from Connecticut." At the time Benjamin Allen was serving on the Revolutionary side, and was discharged on August 8, 1755, and sent back to New England settling at Kingston, MA. There he met and married Beza Delano, and had two sons, Oliver Allen and Benjamin Allen. He was a tanner at Kingston, but later joined Col. Joshua Winslow and sailed from Plymouth to Halifax. While in Nova Scotia, he sided with Col. Jonathan Eddy, and after the Eddy Rebellion failed, he fled into the wildnerness near Cape Tormentine. It was in New Brunswick that he met and married Sarah Somers. Word was sent back to his wife and family in Kingston that he had died in the war. If he had actually returned, he would have been hanged for treason, so I suppose he thought it best to lay low and remain alive. It just goes to show how historical twists and turns, and events such as war can shape a family history. Cousin Tony
