Good news and Confusing news on Benjamin Allen I am not a genealogist and the information I received from surprisingly now seems to indicate that there were 2 different Benjamin Allens, both in the French and Indian wars and the Eddy Rebellion! Tony Gagliani now leans more to the other one from Scotland as our relative (but they may be the same individual). They both can’t be the father of Ephraim who is my ancestor! This is as clear as mud to me. I really don’t know what to do about the Benjamin Allen question and how to deal with it. Until we get more details, I have added this footnote in the Benjamin Allen story and eventually will correct it on the family tree. I have left teh story of How Benjamin Allen became a Torry This also muddles the Adams story which is also unclear to me. I defer to true genealogists to sort it out! Although it muddies the waters, I hope this information is clearer to you than it is to me and helps with details. Best Wishes Rick From Tony Gagliani 5/23/08 “Hello Rick, I recently signed up for three months of Ancestry.com, and found some great information. I now don't believe that our ancestor Benjamin Allen was the Benjamin Allen from Kingston, MA or Windham, CT, but was, in fact, a Scottish soldier who had served as a Corporal in Captain John Frasers Company of the 78th Regiment and was discharged in Canada in 1763. Although this regiment was sometimes called the Highland Regiment, not all soldiers that served in it were Highland Scots. I believe that our Benjamin may well be the Benjamin, son of Benjamin and Jane (McFarland) Allen of Edinburgh. If so, it is possible that he was related to Rebel John and William Allan. This Benjamin Allen came for a time to New England, probably through his association with Ephraim Read, who was a New England Planer from Attenborough, MA, and with whom he served in the French and Indian Wars. I think our ancestor, his son Ephraim, may have been named in honor of Ephraim Read. Benjamin Allen may have gone to Massachusetts for a time with Ephraim Read after the French and Indian War, and then have come to New Brunswick through Saint John. The Eliphalet name may have come from associations with Eliphalet Chappell, a New England planter from near Norwich, CT who had settled near Baie Verte, NB. All three of these men, Ephraim Read, Eliphalet Chappell, and Benjamin Allen appear to have close relationships. I think that Eliphalet Chappell even married Benjamin Allen's wife's sister, Catherine Somers. Ephraim Read named one of his sons Benjamin Read after Benjamin Allen and this Benjamin Read married Jane Allen. His son, Ephraim Read married Roxana Chappell. At least this is how the Benjamin Allen story appears to be shaking out based upon verifiable evidence, thehistorical milieu, and his associations. In a subsequent email From Tony Hi Rick, I don't believe that we are related to Samuel Adams through Benjamin Allen. I believe we are related to the Adams family by marriage through Elizabeth (Capen) Swift, wife of Thomas Swift. One of her sisters married an Adams that was a child of Henry and Edith (Squire) Adams. Also, we may have another by marriage relationship via the Eliots. As far as any confirmed ancestry for Henry Adams back into England and Wales, I am not sure. If I recall, he was from Somersetshire, so there may have been some work done that is available at NEHGS. I would direct your contact there. My family history information on-line is not current. Some of what you may find posted came from earlier work sent to me by others that I have since found was incomplete or incorrect, but, as you know, it finds its way to the web either through automatic transfers of information through genealogy programs, through Mormon contacts eager to begin celestial baptisms of the deceased, etc. Unfortunately I have no immediate plans to update what I have on-line due to present demands on time. Below is what is confirmed. Anything beyond this, while much of it may yet be accurate, remains unconfirmed. If you have time, you may want to see if you can find primary or secondary source documents to confirm or reject the information that has yet to be confirmed.
