Atkinson-McKinnon-Benoit Family Tree information

Let me begin by saying that I have no pride of authorship in most of the data contained in the Atkinson-McKinnon-Benoit Family Tree. I am grateful for the information I received and gleaned from numerous relatives and their web sites and various internet resources. Kith&Kin have exchanged, corroborated, and corrected most of the information but even with all this, I cannot guarantee 100% accuracy of the information on this web site. I am especially grateful to Anthony Gagliani for his Atkinson information, Larry MacDonald for the McKinnon information, and Pat Mahoney for the Benoit information. As the genealogy resources become more available on the web, sometimes family history gets more accurate and but as I have noted, sometimes it gets even murkier.

I have edited as much family history as I have personal knowledge of, and have added several old photographs that my mom, my brothers, and cousins have supplied. Unfortunately most of the old Atkinson family photos were lost in the Blizzard of 78 that did serious damage to the Brant Rock Home. I have also included limited information on the Atkinson, McKinnon, Stuart (Stewart), Fleury and Benoit family surnames at the US and Canadian web sites in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Prince Edward Island in addition to Scotland.

We always seem to want to know “Is there anyone famous that we are related to?" and "Where did we come from?” Everyone's individual family tree tells a great story and ours is particularly fascinating. As you go through the information, you will find that not only are many of us cousins to one another, we are in several instances, "cousins unto ourselves.” Our ancestors were certainly prolific, having huge families and inter and intra-marriage within and between families in Scotland, Canada and “The Colonies” was not unusual. In the early pioneer days the pool of persons available for marriage was much more restricted. Individuals did not live long lives, travel was very difficult, and thus people did not know either their ancestors or direct relatives and there just weren't that many people! Compound this with warfare, old clan rivalries, ancient and current family feuds, religious, political and ethnic discrimination and the restrictions of the day and the result is our extended Kith&Kin!

We should all note that there are key events in the Family Trees that forever shaped our histories. On the Atkinson side, The early 1620’s settlers in New England, the Eddy Rebellion, the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War (even though the earliest Atkinson relatives came over right after the Pilgrims in 1624, the Atkinson side were Tories or as our Canadian cousins call us "Loyalists" during the Revolutionary war and had to leave the colonies quite hastily!) This determined the fate of Benjamin Allen, my 4th great grandfather. In addition, recently discovered documents indicate that the Atkinsons are also of African American in addition to Mi’Kmac Indian descent from 5th. and 6th. great grandparents .
On the McKinnon, Stuart, and Scottish Clans side, the Battle of Culloden Moor and the Stuart heritage of Mary Queen of Scott's have deeply affected our not too distant past and especially the journey of the McKinnons from Scotland to PEI and then across Canada and to the Americas.

I have attached some files for viewing and I have also taken the liberty to add short biographies of my immediate Atkinson Family.
