Lyman was covering the First ward Democratic Ball, a fund raiser for "The Bath House" and Alderman Michael Kenna, nicknamed "Hinky Dink". Lyman snapped a picture of him as he left the Ball, and Coughlin and his cronies beat Lyman severely and smashed Lyman's camera. An off-duty policeman held Lyman while he was attacked. Other uniformed policeman stood by and watched the assault, telling Lyman to "clear out of here". "The Bath House" was arrested the next day.
