Notes for Lyman Lewis Atwell: Successful photographer. Worked for the Chicago Record-Herald.
On December 15, 1908, Lyman was beaten up by a mob lead by Alderman John Coughlin. Coughlin was characterized as part of the "underworld" i.e. in organized crime, and his nickname was "The Bath House". Lyman was covering the First ward Democratic Ball, a fund raiser for "The Bath House" and Alderman Michael Kenna, nicknamed "Hinky Dink". Lyman snapped a picture of him as he left the Ball, and Coughlin and his cronies beat Lyman severely and smashed Lyman's camera. An off-duty policeman held Lyman while he was attacked. Other uniformed policeman stood by and watched the assault, telling Lyman to "clear out of here". "The Bath House" was arrested the next day.
On Saturday, July 24, 1915, Lyman covered the Eastland diasater for the Record-Herald.
By the start of World War II, he was working for the Chicago Tribune. A stock photo published in the Clearfield (PA) Progress on June 23, 1944, is credited to "Lyman Atwell, Chicago Tribune". It is a picture of a man buying a War Bond.
