Some sources give his wife's name as Dorothy Main (or Maine or Mayne or Mains or Maynes). Other sources say her name was Elizabeth (after her mother). The only thing we can be sure of is that John Atwell married "a daughter of John Mayne." This according to Amos Atwell (born 20 Oct 1730, Attleboro, Bristol, MA), who in the late 1700s wrote down the Atwell family oral history that had accumulated over the years.
