HARLES AUSTIN:
IMMIGRATION-FAMILY HISTORY: "Some Descendants of William and Ruth Austin of North Carolina and Virginia" by Boyd Lamar Austin, Jr.,
Stewart R. Austin, and David E. Sims, Jr., published by Austins of America Genealogical Society, August 1990. Editor's Note: The information
received from the authors of this article expands considerably on the article "The Austin Family of Stanly and Union Counties of North Carolina"
by D. Nance August 1987.

Charles and Mary came to America prior to the Revolutionary War with their seven children. They brought their family bible with them and it was still
in the Austin family in 1929. After Charles died about 1771, Mary married a Mr. Hood, and they had a son, Charles Austin Hood.

William and Ruth, Charles' parents, came from Ireland to Southampton County, Virginia. William died about 1770, so their immigration took place prior
to that date. It is presumed that Charles and Mary did not come to America at the same time as William and Ruth, but at a later date. Charles'
nephew, Bryant (son of John) had located in the Hillsborough District of Wake County, North Carolina, and that is where Charles and Mary settled.

FAMILY HISTORY: Notes of Janet Austin Curtis, AFAOA genealogist, in possession of AFAOA. In addition to other-wise cited printed sources, she
lists the contributions of: Mrs. Bonnie Austin Petteway of Charlotte, NC; Mrs. Fred D. Austin of Charlotte, NC: Mrs. R.W. Grey of Livonia, MI
(1963)

Tradition in the Charles Austin, Jr. family states that he was born in Virginia and orphaned at 15 (1771) at which time he ran away or at least left home
and went to Wake Co., NC. This is the basis for the death date for Charles, Sr.
" In the old Family Bible, which was supposed to have belonged originally to the first Charles, it is stated that the family came from Ireland. However,
Inez Austin Bemis stated that the family was English, which is certainly possible, since England ruled Ireland for some six hundred years, and a
great portion of the population was, indeed, English. Inez was also supposed to have the Bible in her possession at the time of her death, but I
never saw it even though I lived with her off and on for many years. At her death in 1944 it was probably taken by her brother,James Madison Austin, or her sister, Winnie Austin Carpenter. No one knows where it is now." - D. Nance

BIBLE: "JIMMY, An Austin Chronicle" by his mother Elizabeth Reid Austin, 1993. 118 Newman St. , Greenville, SC 29601. In possession of the
AFAOA Southern genealogist. "the old Bible Charles Austin brought to this country...is in the possession of descendants of Bonnie Austin
Petteway, wife of Dr. George W. Petteway. Mrs. Petteway and Mrs. Fred D. Austin published research on the Austin and Little families in "The
Monroe Enquirer", Monroe, NC under the auspices of the John Foster Chapter, DAR, in the late 1950's." (Feb 1959?)

ARY:
FAMILY HISTORY: After Charles died about 1778, Mary married a Mr. Hood, and they had a son, Charles Austin Hood. (Some historians believe that
Mary was pregnant with Charles' son at the time of her marriage to Mr. Hood. This was not an uncommon occurrence). The birth, marriage and
death of Charles Austin Hood was recorded in the family Bible, brought to this country by the first Charles. The Bible was in the possession of
Inez Austin Bemis of Palm Springs, FL., but upon her death in August, 1944, it disappeared. Notes that were copies of portions of that Bible were
found among her papers.

Notes for J
OHN AUSTIN:
FAMILY HISTORY: John was a brother to Charles Austin from information contained in Charles Austin's family Bible. It is unknown if John settled
with his father in Virginia or if he went to North Carolina prior to 1770. Later we find Michael and Richard, two of his sons, in the Richardson
Creek, North Carolina area. Land grant records show that sons John, Michael and Richard, received land in the Richardson Creek area.

CENSUS: 1790 NC, Anson, Fayette Dist. Numbers stand for: males over 16, males under 16, and females. John Austin 3-1-1; John Austin 3-0-0; John
Austin 1-0-0. There is also a Michael 1-2-4. This implies that this John Austin is still alive in 1790, and in fact that there is one more John than
accounted for in this database. Research is needed.

CHILDREN: Some confusion exists as to whether John or Richard was the father of the children that are assigned to John . Jane Austin Edwards says
that John is the father of these children. The dispute concerning the proper lineage is in the ambiguity of the notes that are quoted from Charles'
family bible, where Charles describes Bryant, Michael and Richard ( known to be brothers) as his nephews. Charles does not identify the father, so
it is open to question. D. Nance, in his article "The Austin Family of Stanly and Union Counties in North Carolina" ( published in 'Austins of
America' in August 1987) lists Richard as the father, and since the article " Some Descendants of William and Ruth Austin of North Carolina and
Virginia" published in 'Austins of America' in August, 1990, follows D. Nance's article, it also lists Richard.

Liz Austin Carlin, Austin Families Assn genealogist, has placed the children with John. Primarily because John appears in the records of Anson Co., but
she has not found any record of John's brother Richard.
