Source - JC Aveling BA. M A. To AJ Aveling 1961. How did Thomas earn his living? He was obviously a well-off farmer living in Whittlesey itself; he has a number of Steares. He owned his own house. His lands would pretty certainly be strips in what were still the great common arable fields of the town. His eldest son would succeed him in these holdings. He was rated in the Subsidy [Tax] books for 5 pounds - quite a large sum in those days. He married Ellen [Kelfull?] who survived him . She made her own will as Helen Avelen widow of Whittleseye saynt marie Dec 12th 1556. ..'My sowlle to God Allmyghtie Our Ladye Sancte Marye and alle the blessed companye of heaven...A fine gowne to the saide churche to make a vestment---her pewter platters and flagons--clothes--'[NB.religious conditions were then fast changing. When 1 and 2 above made their Wills,England was a catholic country as it had always been for the last 1,000 years before that and Saint Mary's and Saint Andrew's were catholic churches. Whittlesey then had many religious guilds;the large monasteries towered over the fens;St.Mary's had lights kept burning before statues etc. by the towns people. When Thomas made his Will in 1541 Henry V111 , his King, had broken with the Pope, but , apart from pulling down the monastries , had left the Mass and sacraments. Between the death of Thomas Avelyne in 1542 and his wife Helene's death in 1556,Henry V111's son Edward V1, had had the churches stripped compulsorary of catholic fittings and tried to introduce protestantism. But in 1553 his sister the catholic Queen Mary 1 had succeeded him and restored the full catholic religion..
