Notes for Thomas Aveling: !Source - AJ Aveling "Aveling of Whittlesey" ( by J.C.Aveling 1961.) Thomas Avelyne, the younger. He made his will on Dec 18th 1558 of St Mary's Parish, Whittlesey.. - "fyrst of alle my sowle into the handes of Almightye God, our blessed Ladye Sainte Marye and all the companye of heaven...to the highe altar for lyghtes xiid., to reparation of the churche viD. This is interesting, because Queen Mary 1 had died in mid-November 1558, a month before he made his will. Her successor, her half-sister, was Queen Elizabeth 1 (1558 - 1603) a Protestant, who was finally to take away the Mass from St Mary's and St Andrew's. But Thomas is still very much a Catholic and presumes there are still altar and votive lights before it in St Mary's. His wife was clearly dead by 1558. He owned 'lands in fee simple' as well as lands in the common town fields - i.e. he had bought or inherited lands of his own.
