John Aveling (b. 12 September 1751, d. 21 February 1790)
John Aveling (son of Thomas Aveling and Elizabeth Boone) was born 12 September 1751 in Whittlesey, and died 21 February 1790 in Horsegate House, Whittlesey. He married Alice Boone on 29 June 1773 in St Mary's, Whittlesey,Cambs Record Office REF: P170A/1/9, daughter of Thomas Boone and Alice Smith.

John Aveling was baptised at St Mary's on September 19th 1751; lived at Glassmoor and was a partner, first of his brother-in-law, Simon Smith, as graziers, and then of his father in 1789. He married on June 29th 1773 at St Mary's to Alice Boone daughter of Thomas Boone and Alice Smith. As a result of this marriage there was a good deal of land inheritence. The property descended by the wills of- 1. George Smith, will 1770, who then left- A. to his granddaughter Mrs Kentish (Elizabeth Smith then) 50 acres of Bird's Hundred and house; 3.5 full lands in Whittlesey fields. B. to his daughter Alice Boone (mother of Alice) wife of John Aveling the other half of 50 acres of Bird's Hundred; 0.5 a full land. 2. John Hardley, will 1779 and his brother William Hardley will 1781 to Elizabeth Aveling, wife of Edward Aveling and mother of Mrs Kentish 120 Acres in Norfolk; 330 acres in Cambridgeshire; houses. 3. Thomas Boone, will 1786 Whittlesey field land and houses, In fact Mrs Kentish died June 7th 1792 and Mrs Alice Boone (John Aveling's mother-in-law) was admitted sole heiress October 1794 at Whittlesey Manor Court. But part was held also by Edward Aveling until his death Dec 1810. In the chancel of St Mary's Whittlesey is a wall momument under a classical weeping angel - To the memory of Elizabeth Kentish wife of Richard Kentish Esquire who died of Pulmonary Consumption at Kentish Town near London June the 7th 1792 aged 27 years. 'This monument is erected by her Husband who designed it at Rome whither he went for recovery of his health impaired by sorrow, this marble is further sacred to ye Rememberance of Eliz: Aveling wife of Edward Aveling gent. and Mother of ye above Lady who died Nov 2nd 1788 at ye age of 53 years and of Robert Smith LLD and formerly of St John's College; Cambridge. John inherited lands in several parts of Whittlesey from his mother Elizabeth, her will was proved 10th March 1789. John's father Thomas made his will Dec 2nd 1789 and died the following day. John inherited Horsegate House, the malting premises, 101 acres at Flegcoft with barn, stables, yard and mill atached, bakery, other lands in Whittlesey and late Uncle Daniel's Davies Plash house, cottage and land adjoining in Blackbush. John's will is dated Jan 27th 1790. Proved,June 1st 1790. He died suddenly of influenza contracted after getting very wet while shooting at Flegcroft, and was buried at St Andrew's 23rd Feb 1790. His widow made her will Feb 17th 1810 still expectant of the decease of Edward Aveling of Whittlesey gent. she was buried with her husband with a joint stone. ....................Grave Stone in St Mary's Churchyard....................... Thomas son of John & Alice Aveling died Feb.23 1788 aged 13 years. Also 6 children who died in their infancy.
