George Smith Aveling (b. 5 June 1823, d. 2 December 1881)

George Smith Aveling (son of John Aveling and Jane Speechley) was born 5 June 1823 in "Horsegate House" Whittlesey, Cambs. Eng., and died 2 December 1881 in Millswyn St .Sth Yarra, Vic. Aust.. He married Mary Bermingham on 24 April 1858 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia, daughter of Edw. Bermingham and Margaret Conlon.

AVELING OF WHITTLESEY ISLE OF ELY.
George Smith Aveling, born at Horsegate House Whittlesey Cambridgeshire June5th 1823. Why he alone of all these children was he given this second name?
According to tradition he was named after Sir Harry Smith, the Whittlesey hero
and that Sir Harry was his godparent.
Like all the rest of the sons, he was hard put to it after the crash of
1835-6. He was apprenticed to Mr Joseph Bishop Ironmonger of Whittlesey on the25th of Nov 1839 and sailed with him from Liverpool for Australia aboard the South Carolina on Oct 5th 1853.
The South Carolina arrived at Melbourne Australia on the 4th of Jan 1854.

others thank Captain Lusk for a safe trip from the Old to the New World etc
etc.
George was living on Beach Road, Brighton, in 1856 and was working for Mr
Joseph Bishop as a Clerk (See 1856 Electoral Roll).
In 1858 he was working for Mr Bishop at 43 Elizabeth St, Melbourne. He
married at Brighton Vic on April 24th 1858, Mary Bermingham, daughter of EdwardBermingham and Margaret Conlon of Kings County, Ireland.
He died on the 2nd Dec 1881 at his residence, No 106 Millswyn St, South
Yarra. His wife Mary died there on 27th June 1912.
