Notes for Arthur John Aveling: !Source - AJ Aveling AVELING OF WHITTLESEY ISLE OF ELY "Horsegate House" Australian line Arthur John Aveling,born 27th December 1892. He was only 16 months old when his mother died on the 19th May 1894 He was brought up in South Yarra by his father with the help of his grandmother & his aunt Jane.He also worked for the Mutual Store.He married Lily Mary Hopley,dau.of John Sydney Hopley & Mary Ann Doyle of South Yarra at St Patricks Cathedral Melbourne 26th November 1921. In his own business as a Designer & maker of cane furniture until the Depression. He moved with his wife and young family to his fathers farm at Spring Vale South. later he bought two ajoining blocks of land in Royal avenue Spring Vale and built his own home.He and his two brothers were employed to build a dog coursing track on the old Sandown Park race track. He let his house in Royal avenue and moved to a large house on the Sandown Park race course on the 22nd Jan.1942 where he was employed.Later the American Army took over Sandown Park for a Motor pool & Army Camp. Arthur was employed by the U.S.Army to convert buildings into shower rooms & kitchens etc. He and his family had great times while living in the middle of the U.S.Army Camp. He moved back to his own home late 1944.He was in poor health and in 1949 his son built him a new home on the land he owned next door.He sold his old home and bought a block of land at 7 Surf Street Parkdale,right on the beach.His son had started to build him a home there,when his health got worse and he died at his home in Spring Vale on June 16th 1950. His wife Lily was living at Mentone when she died at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne on October 14th 1960.
