"AVELING'S OF WHITTLESEY"

Agnes Aveling born December 12th 1880; much smaller than sisters. She married -in about 1905 - Hayward Argyle Scott. He was the son of a captain in the Blue Funnel Line, sailing out of Liverpool-a Scot from Cupar in Fife. Hayward was born on his father's ship in the Indian Ocean.
His family were Scots and able and he had a large number of relations who seem to be doctors, civil servants, University teachers, writers. Hayward was a musician, trained in Germany under Weingartner, Mus.Bach. [Manchester University], Mus.Doc. [Durham University] and a composer-see Landon Ronald. 'Who's Who in Music.' Some of his music has been played by the B.B.C. He was a very dreamy and unpractical man and never very easy to talk to. He had a certain amount of money of his own, with which he built a quite large house in Blunt's Lane, Whittlesey- 'Cressington'-with greenhouses, a long garden containing a tennis court. The house was full of books. Yet-quite out of his element -he was for years an elementary schoolmaster in the town in a school full of roughish boys; and taught music. 'Cressington' was always much more of a genteel house than the other family houses in Whittlesey. I remember having grapes out of the greenhouse there, tennis parties in summer, being taken into the pantry by my Aunt Agnes for soda water and lemonade. Aunt Agnes was the soul of kindness to us boys. They also were devout Anglicans and Uncle Hayward was long organist of St Mary's. Aunt Agnes died in Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge Oct 12th 1935 and was buried at Whittlesey. Uncle Hayward retired from his school.
I forgot to say that he served in the Army in the 1914-18 War in Italy and
wrote a book about it. I don't think he enjoyed anything of that except the
Italian countryside. He lived on at ' Cressington 'with his daughter, becoming
more and more feeble and died in Peterborough Hospital in April 1961 and is
buried at Whittlesey.
