Notes for N
ELS PETER ANDERSEN:
Farmed in Fowler, CO. 42 or 46 years. Member of the Lutheran Trinity Church and the Danish American Brotherhood. Moved to Pueblo CO in March 1940 to live with daughter Margaret Simonson. Had lived in Pueblo 2 years at the time of his death. Possibly Anna had moved to Pueblo a few years prior but he continued to try and run the farm for a few more years (purely conjecture?)

From the "Precious Memories" of Aunt Billie and Margaret Ann Abbott.

Papa was a good man and took care of his family but he was very stern and a strict disciplinarian. All of us worked hard at very young ages. We never worked on Sunday but on weekdays we were up at the crack of dawn to work in the fields. In the middle of the day Mama would bring crackers and lemonade out to us and we would rest for a while.
Dad didn't want us to waste our time sitting and reading. I can remember sitting in the Kitchen with my sisters each of us working on our embroidery while Dad was there--when Dad went out, the books that lay under our sewing came out and we would read. Mother helped with this "small deception" because she knew how important the books were and how much we enjoyed them. Dad was frequently called for jury duty and we would have a Ball! Mama would make candy and popcorn and we would play Old Maid and just be kids!
He took Mama, Rose and me to our very first movie, a silent movie called "Birth of a Nation"What an exciting day that was.
Papa read three chapters from the Bible every morning at the breakfast table. He sang to us when we went to bed, that was special!

From Virginia Greenwood, Nannie was in Detroit and made money to send for him. She was only 4'10" but a bundle of energy, she the first women libbers, she sent for him to come.

From the Obituary in Pueblo paper. Farmed in Fowler, Co for 42 or 46 yrs (discrepancy in the 2 articles) Had lived in Pueblo with daughter Margaret Simonson for 5 years at time of her death. Moved to Pueblo in March of 1940 from Fowler, CO.

From the "Precious Memories" of Aunt Billie.
Mama came from Denmark and went to Weeping Water, NB where she had a job and room and board with a family there. Papa came later and they moved to a Scandinavian community called Fowler CO. Margaret Christine was born in Weeping Water. The family had 80 acres located 5 miles West of Fowler. We raised sugar beets, hay, oats and all our vegetables and fruit. We also had cows, horses, pigs, and chickens. Watermelons were ripened in a straw stack and in the winter we would dive in and hunt for the melons. Grannie said all they ate was the hearts of the melons there were so many The home had a big kitchen with a large cupboard and an icebox. there was a large parlor, bedroom for the girls with 2 big beds, a bedroom for our parents and Papa added a room for the boys. There was screened front porch where the family sat in the evenings. \\
We got to school by riding in a covered wagon. First we had to walk 1/2 mile to get to the main road. Many of the children would bring heated bricks to keep their feet warm. This was a good idea but by the time we got to the road the bricks were cold as our feet. The school had 2 rooms. one room for 1-4 and the other for grades 5-8. Grannie was so proud that she graduated from the 8th grade, not all children could go that far because they were needed at home but her mother made sure they Graduated\\
The family was all Baptized in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fowler. Church was a big part of our lives. Once a week we went to someone's house to learn our catechism and Church history. We sat on benches, not padded pews with high backs. The sermons were very long and the song leader would always ask us to sing slower and slower. We did not like that very much.
These "Precious Memories" were dictated to Margaret Ann Abbott.
"Mother was an Angel" all of the children agreed on this one thing. One time when I (Lilian) was 7 Mama was driving the wagon while Papa harvested sugar beets. Suddenly the horses spooked and began to run, we could not stop them. All our yelling did not help, finally they ran between a cottonwood tree and the house and the wagon stuck and stopped. Mama was scared but safe. She worked so hard did the whole family together on the farm. Grannie was afraid of the horses they had. She turned eggs every 2 hours in the root cellar. She sewed our clothes, ironed with a flat iron, quilted, helped in the fields, canned everything and raised 7 children. I could never have done half of what she did.\
After all the hard work in the fields sometimes it would hail and all the crops and fruit trees would be ruined. There was one good Thing about the hail...Mama would make ice cream! Grannie talked of this with excitement also, this and sugar and butter on bread because sugar was a splurge \\
A funny things we kids notices was that when Mama made the grocery list she wrote real small and not in columns so the list looked little. If it was too long Papa got upset. One time Mama was on the phone when lightning struck the house, she was knocked clear across the room!

  Notes for MARGARET CHRISTINE ANDERSEN:
First Born Andersen
Excerpt from "Precious Memories" by Lillian O'Donnell (Aunt Billie)
Margaret was employed by Mr. and Mrs. John Holmes when she was 16 years old. When the flu epidemic hit Pueblo, Mrs. Holmes died and Margaret stayed on to take care of the family and house. She gave us our first Christmas presents. I remember because it was my first doll! She was a very good sister, more like a second mother to all of us in many ways.
Her husband Harry Rockefeller died. Later, she married Mildred Coates' father Walter Simonsen. It was a happy marriage.
(I remember Margaret writing a letter to her sister Clara every Monday morning. She faithfully continued doing this even when her eyesight was failing and she was in Pueblo Manor. M. A. )
