Charles Edwin Averill (son of John Rundlett Averill and Sarah Knight) was born Apr 12, 1853 in Lovell, Oxford County, ME, and died Mar 09, 1914 in Indianapolis, Marion County, IN2. He married Jessie Maude Stubbs on Aug 11, 1884 in Durango, LaPlata County, CO3, daughter of George W. Stubbs and Jennie Sarah Pugh.

At an early age (1863) Charles' parents moved to Portland, ME where he received his education in the high school and Bowdoin College. On entering college he became a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Greek Letter Fraternity. In 1879 he went to Durango, CO where he was elected judge of the police court and served one term. He met Judge George Stubbs and in 1884 married his daughter Jessie.

In 1885, Charles and his wife returned returned to Indianapolis, IN with Judge Stubbs. Judge Stubbs and Charles formed a law partnership and opened offices in the old Iron Block, which was destroyed by fire. They remained together until the judge's election to the police bench in 1893. In 1904 he formed a partnership with James A. Collins until Mr. Collins was elected to the city bench. G. Edgar Turner took Mr. Collins place and the firm became Averill & Turner. This partnership continued until Charles' death.

Charles was a well known lawyer of Marion County, IN and a member of the Indianapolis Bar. His abilities were best displayed in the briefs in the supreme and appellate Courts. He drafted at the request of Judge Stubbs, the bill which became the law creating the juvenile court. During the term of Judge Collins as city judge, Charles sat for him as special judge.
