Notes for Jesse Hull: After the death of his father in the Revolutionary War Jesse probably lived in Wilkes County with his uncle Moses Hull. Moses and Jesse were witnesses to the sale of a parcel of land to Zebedee Denny in Wilkes County on 7 Feb 1799 and this probably was the first time Jesse appears in extant county records.
Early records of Overton County, TN are extremely few since the courthouses have experienced disaster. One long list of able-bodied men does exist when, in 1813, the "Inhabitants of Overton Co.," circulated a petition to form a company of "Mounted Men" to fight in the War with Great Britain. Jesse Hull, John Huddleston, Allen Brock, and later in the list, John Cargile and Joel Brock to name a few, were signers of the petition, all known to be friends, neighbors or related to Jesse. Jesse and his wife Rebecca were early members of Clear Fork Baptist Church, Rebecca having been received by letter in March 1814 from Wilkes County, NC church. Jesse and his large family were enumerated in the 1820 census of Cumberland County, KY, in a 5 to 8 mile area that was in dispute with TN and fell into Clinton County, KY were formed in 1836.
Jesse Hull applied for bounty land in Clinton County on 2 Dec 1850 and again in 1855 stating: "He was a Private in the Company commanded by Captain James Turner and was under Major Woodfork and Colonel Hart in the war with Great Britian declared by the United States on 18 June 1812, that he was drafted at Monroe, TN, Overton County on the 17th of Sept 1814 for the time of six months and continued in actual service for six months and He thinks was lacking three days of seven months." He attested in Albany, Clinton County, KY that he was a resident of Overton County, TN, and was born 11 Sept 1773.
Jesse and Jane, his second wife, appear in the 1850 census of Overton County, TN and in the 1860 census of Clinton County, KY. The census places Jane's birth in Ireland about 1796 and guardianship records of Clinton County give death on 1 Mar 1879 from old age and a stroke which had left her helpless in the care of John A. Ashinhurst. Jane had applied for widow's pension on 6 Jun 1878 declaring that she married Jesse Hull in 1835 in Overton County, by Justice of the Peace Steven Sewell, and that Jess died in 1863. There was no mention of children.
