Notes for George W. Stubbs: George acquired a legal education and became a member of the Indiana Bar. He distinguished himself particularly as judge of the Marion County Juvenile Court. He was known as "The Father of the Juvenile Court".
After the onset of the Civil War he enlisted as a private in the 16th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and afterward served with honor in the signal corps. At the close of war Judge Stubbs returned to Shelbyville where he practiced law for a time.
He served two terms on the Police Court bench. Two years following his election to Police Court, he utilized every opportunity to bring about the separation of adults and minors in court hearings. His efforts were rewarded on March 10, 1903 when the legislature passed a Stubbs-sponsored bill setting up the mechanics for establishment of the Juvenile Court.
He was appointed to serve until the November general elections at which time he ran for the office and won hands down. He was in his second term when he was struck and fatally injured by an interurban car shortly after leaving the old Courthouse at Alabama and Washington Streets.
While rabbit hunting in the fields north of Irvington, his gun was accidentally discharged, mutilating his left and and forearm so that amputation was necessary.
