Notes for Rebecca Guthery: Notes for REBECCA GUTHERY:
"Obituary--- Died on March 4th. 1897, Mrs Rebecca Tompkins, age 84 years, 6 months and 3 days. The subject of this notice, from the best information obtainable, was born where now is Clinton County Ky., Sept. 1, 1812. In her youth she lived on Wolf River near its mouth, in said county. She was the daughter of James A. and Sarah Guthery; was married to Rev. H. A. Tompkins about the year 1832 or 1833; spent the early years ofher married life where now is Pickett County, Tenn. and moved with her husband to Fentress County. She was the mother of eleven children, five of which survive her, the other six having passed to the other shore in advance. Her funeral took place at the Mt. Helen Baptist Church, of which she was a charter member, on March 5, in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing friends and relatives, among whom were three of her children, thirty three grand children and fifteen great grand children. She leaves the following rather remarkable posterity: children living 5, dead 6, grand children living 72, dead 11, great grand children living 104, dead 8. Total posterity living 181, dead 26. Total posterity living and dead 206 She became a member of the church in early life, and hand and hand with her companion, whom she survived six years and four days, she met the responsibilities of life both secular and religious. They by industry and economy acquired a fair living. She was mainly remarkable for the quietness ofher disposition, not-withstanding which the moral forces of her christian example was great. All her children that lived to mature age were members of the church and nearly all her grand children that had reached maturity are worthy christian people. Such are the fruits of a pious life. May her friends emulate her bright example. Grandmother Tompkins, or "Aunt Becky" as she was familiarly called, has finished her labors and joined her sainted husband. Together they lie in the Mt. Helen cemetery and rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." S. B.Pierce, Fentress County Gazette, March 18, 1897
