Includes NotesNotes for William Averill, Sr.:
William Averill, immigrant ancestor, and probably the progenitor of all of the early families in this country of this surname, came from England to Ipswich. The name is variously spelled Averel, Averell, Averhill, Averill and Avery.

The year of the Averill family's emigration is not known. They were still in Chiping Norton in September 1634, and the first mention of William Averill in New England is on March 2, 1637 when Ipswich, where he settled, granted him six acres of planting ground on the further side of Muddy River, and twenty acres of upland and six acres of meadow at Chebacco, then a part of Ipswich but now the town of Essex. Presumably he had been given a house lot in the town at some previous time, and it is probably that he received this unrecorded grant in 1645 or 1636. This lot, whereon the family lived, was on the northeast side of the Ipswich River at the "great cove" below the falls and contained another three acres. (This location is shown on Diagram #1 in "Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony" by Thomas F. Walters.

"In April 21, 1692, a warrant of witchcraft was issued in Topsfield against Sarah Averell W ildes, daughter of William and Abigail, and several prominent citizens. She was arrested the next day and sent to Boston jail May 13. She and the others were brought in to Lieutenant Nathaniel Ingersoll's before the magistrates, examined, committed for trial, and condemned on June 30, 1692. Her husband John Wildes and son, Ephraim Wildes, Constable of Topsfield, tried their best to save her. Her son testified that, according to his belief, Mr. and Mrs. Hobbs, after being seized by him, accused his Mother in revenge for his legal action. She was executed with four others on July 19, 1692.
