THE AVERA/AVERY FAMILY HISTORY
My name is Bill Avery and I am doing research of the Avery and Avera families who settled in Putnam County, GA from 1808-1900, and Bibb County, AL from 1820-1900, and Watson family of Laurens-Twiggs-Houston County, GA and Henry County, AL. from 1800-1900, and am very interested in communicating with other descendants.

The Avera family most likely originally came from France and emmigrated to England in the 1500s to avoid religous persecution in France during the French Hugueneaut movement there.

The first Avera to arrive in the Virginia Colonies was Henry Avera, who arrived in 1642 with his wife Ann. Actually, Henry was the only AVERA who came to Virginia who actually spelled his name as AVERA on a continual basis, just as the Avera families who came and settled in Johnston County, area NC did. Many of the given names used in Elizabeth City County, VA by the Averas match the given names used by the Averas who came to the Johnston County area in the 1740s. Henry settled in Elizabeth City County, VA and had 2 sons by his first wife Ann--Alexander and Thomas Avera between 1650-1665. His wife Ann died around 1665, and he then married the widow of John Poole, Jane. Henry and Jane also had 2 sons--Charles (born abt. 1671)and Henry Avera, Jr. (born about 1674.)Charles is buried on the old plantation in Hampton, VA in what is today known as the Roundtree/Cedar Island Cemetery. The present address for this cemetery and property is 268 Harris Creek Rd, Hampton, VA.

I believe that my Thomas Avera, Sr (d. 1761 Johnston County, NC) was the son of Alexander Avera who was born 1675-1685 to Thomas Avera, who was the son of Henry & Ann. I have uncovered substantial circumstantial proof & documentation for this connection. Alexander went to Beaufort County,NC & bought land there in 1709. He had two sons Alexander II & Thomas. It is this Thomas who I believe is Thomas Avera Sr, d. 1761 in Johnston County. Alexander II had Alexander III who Averasboro, NC is named after. There was much interaction in the Johnston County area between the Avera & Poole families.
Some of the Avera/Avery family moved to Georgia and Alabama from Johnston County, NC, after their father Thomas Avera, Sr. died in 1761, and left them orphans. Three brothers-Isaac, Arthur, and Samuel originally moved to Wilkes County, GA., and settled there with their guardian, Benjamin Scott. Benjamin founded the first Methodist meeting house in GA in Wilkes County. Benjamin Scott's sister Sarah Scott was married to William Poole, who was the grandson of Jane and John Poole of Elizabeth City Co, VA. After John Poole died, Jane married Henry Avera about 1672. This explains the connection of Benjamin Scott to the Avera family, and also the connection of the Poole family of Johnston Co, NC to the Averas. Samuel and Arthur moved from Wilkes Co to Putnam Co and settled there, buying about 1200 acres.
Thomas' other son Henry moved from NC to SC in 1797, and then continued on to Bibb County, AL by 1830. His son John Avery settled in Putnam County, GA, purchasing land next to his uncle Arthur there.

I am descended from Thomas Sr VIA A DOUBLE CONNECTION--son Henry 1753-1836 Bibb Co, AL, through his son John Avery c. 1785-1859 Putnam Co, GA>Henry Avery(1808-1876) AND Thomas' son Arthur (1761-1823) Putnam Co>Bradley Avery (1785-1836) Putnam Co>Sarah Ann Avery(1830-1902).
My wife is descended from Reddick Watson (b. abt 1775 Jo Co, NC d. c1849 Henry Co, AL) through his son Clairborne (b. 1792 NC d. 1880 Henry Co)>Anderson 1821-1875.

The land was originally part of 202 acres owned by Arthur Avera, in the Glades/Harmony area of North Putnam County,GA. I found this cemetery in 2001, and have restored it. It was extremely overgrown with brush and trees, and the tombstones were all damaged. There were only 2 tombstones that could be saved. Buried there are Sarah Ann Avery, Thomas Stuart Robins, Joseph Avery (their son), William A. Avery (my grandfather), and his son Lucius Robins Avery. The cemetery is located on Littles Rd., 1 mile north of the intersection of Littles Rd and Harmony Rd, north of Eatonton, GA., and sits on top of a hill about 2000 feet back from the road behind a farmhouse. • Arthur Avera's family cemetery more photos (290 KB)
A second photo of this cemetery on Arthur Avera's land in Putnam County, GA. Although no one knows for sure, as all the graves were unmarked, I believe that this was the "main" cemetery, so to speak, for all the Avery family members who died in Putnam County between 1810-1880. There has never been another Avery cemetery found, to date, on any other land owned by any Avery family memeber there. Also, there are probably graves belonging to his deceased slaves, and possibly to some Ingram family memebers. The Ingrams and Averys were long time friends, and there were several marriages between them.
