And now for something completely different.

Welcome to my home page! I've been working on my tree since 1997, and have found quite a number of names on my own and through the help of others. In the time that I've had this site here, I've found quite a bit that I'm glad to share with you.

Major surnames to look for in my family from Hamlin, New York (and other parts of NY) : Baase, Rockow, Heise, Rath, Kelso, Klafehn, Vick, Leverenz, and Schepler. Major surnames for Chicago, Illinois (and other places) include: Raap, Block, Hoffman, Markowsky, Schlueter, Bobzin, Matthias, Doehla, Gilow, Schroeder, and Lueder. If you have information on any of these, contact me and we'll compare notes.

Additional important surnames for my mom's side include: Cowles, Peterson, Gorman, Huffaker, Luikaart, Pfeiffer, Olson, Cizik, Belling, Erichsen, Wichman, Dilcher, Jiede, Mech, McCullough, Koenig, Ritter, Rucker, Kentgen, Kurth, Mork, Zech.
Other prominent surnames for Hamlin (dad's side) besides those listed above include: Bauch, Bauer, Pagels, Seaman, Waterstreet, Wessendorf, Westphal, and Wolf.

In starting this new site in 2002, I decided to reorganize the way I presented my data, to differentiate it from the way my old site was organized. I left the old one up, and since there are some things there that you won't find here, you might want to follow the *link* towards the bottom of this page. If there's something you need to know that I don't know, or don't have here, I can conduct you to a more appropriate source. What you'll find on this site (if it's not here yet, it will be soon):

* Family photos (mostly from the Chicago side) and scans of documents. If you have any similar images to add, let me know. (the photos are not in the same order I placed them in; I don't know why this happens.)
* The four Outline Reports *linked* below reflect the lines in my Chicago side of the family, my mom's side. If you're looking for more information on these family lines, you would want to look at my old site, so look at the first link in my "links" section, right below the Outline Reports.
* Links to various sites I have found useful. Some are links to sites which belong to people I'm related to, or may or may not be related to. Make sure to have a look at "Genealogy's Virtual Cemetery", searching for the various cemeteries listed on this homepage. Most of the data from my Hamlin side came from the Monroe County Genweb site, but it looks like they took that information down.

Most of my information from my hometown has come from my grandmother Loraine Raap (and other relatives, through her), the Chicago Public Library (the Harold Washington library downtown, which has census records and old newspapers on microfilm), the SSDI, and various local graveyards. Nearly all of the information for my Hamlin side came from either the internet, or from other people who have found me online.

    This is a picture of me, your humble author, in 1997, sometime around the time I started this little project. Actually, it's not very humble to put a picture of yourself first is it? Oh come on now, I'm a handsome devil aren't I! If you have any scanned pictures to share with me, or pictures you'd like me to scan, I can post them here.

    This is a picture of my great-grandmother Edith Block, holding my cousin Tracy and me as babies in late 1974.

    This map is directly east to the last one and shows more places in Mecklenburg: Brudersdorf, Beestland, Dargun, and others.

    I'm not sure where I got this map from, but it's very old. It could even be from the 19th century.
  • Oakridge Cemetery (95 KB)
    This is the front gateway to Oakridge Cemetery, at Roosevelt Road and Oakridge Ave, in Hillside, Illinois. My great-great-great grandparents Charles and Alvina Matthias are buried here (Sec.4, Lot 23), but they have no grave markers. Buried in the *Virtual Cemetery* are: their son Walter Matthias and his wife Ethel Jennie Matthias.

    This is a picture of my grandfather Fred Baase, with me sleeping on his lap. It was taken on one of my grandparents' visits to Chicago, in 1978.

    This is the front of Acacia Park Cemetery, 7800 Irving Park Road (west of Harlem). Buried in the *Virtual Cemetery* are: Ernest Hoffman and Alma Matthias-Hoffman, Harold Raap and Gertrude Hoffman-Raap, William F Block and Edith Markowsky-Block, Eleanor Block, Robert A Raap Sr., and Thomas Minton.

    This is the best and most recent photo I have of my Mom's side of my family.

    This is the death certificate of my great-great grandmother, Anna Schlueter.

    This is a picture of my great-uncle Bill Block holding my sister Jenny, who he always called Red. This was probably taken at my 6th birthday party, in my parents' basement.
  • Ridgewood Cemetery & Mausoleum, Des Plaines, IL (80 KB)
    This sign shows the front of Ridgewood Cemetery, 9900 N. Milwaukee Avenue (by Central). Buried in the *Virtual Cemetery* are: Elmer Peterson Sr and Anna Block-Peterson, Arthur Block and Emily Huhn-Block, William Luikaart Sr., Norman Pfieffer, and Gary Pfieffer.
  • Graceland Cemetery, Chicago (177 KB)
    Graceland Cemetery is where three generations of the Raap family are buried. The cemetery is located in Chicago at 4001 N. Clark Street (by Irving Park rd). Many famous people are buried here, including: Marshall Field, Potter Palmer, George Pullman, and Louis Sullivan - but I don't have pictures of any of them. I took some of these picutres in July 1999, and some in December 99 - see if you can guess which ones are which!
  • John Henry Raap, Jr., died March 29, 1946. (177 KB)
    This is the death certificate of my great-great-great grandfather John Henry Raap's first son, "Hank".
  • Uncle Bill and Aunt Fern's 50th Anniversary (62 KB)
    This picture was taken at my mom's Uncle Bill and Aunt Fern's 50th wedding anniversary, in 1991.
  • Montrose Cemetery, Chicago (85 KB)
    This sign is at the front driveway of Montrose Cemetery, 5400 N. Pulaski Road (by Foster, near St. Lucas and Bohemian National cemeteries). Buried in the *Virtual Cemetery* are: Carl Markowsky and Sophia Doehla-Markowsky, Edward Erichsen and Elizabeth Markowsky-Erichsen.
  • Graceland: Raap Family Plot (146 KB)
    This is the family plot (Lot 172, section G, area 350). There are 15 people buried here, but only 7 of them have tombstones: in the foreground from left to right are John Henry Raap Sr., Lena Gielow-Raap, Pearl Raap-McWhirter, Matilda Raap, and John Henry Raap Jr.; on the left of the large monument is Ernest E. Raap, and on the right is Anna Schlueter-Raap. (See the "Book" from the below link to find out more about who is buried here.)

    This is my great-grandfather's birth certificate.

    This is me meeting my cousin's baby Marissa for the first time. (yes, that's me and not the mother! haha) this picture was taken at my grandma's annual family picnic.
  • Mount Olive Cemetery, Chicago (94 KB)
    This impressive archway is the entrance to Mount Olive Cemetery, 3800 N. Narragansett Avenue (between Addison and Irving Park). Buried in the *Virtual Cemetery* are: Walter W. Block and Hilma Mork-Block, little Hilma R. Block, and George E. Block and Beatrice Davey-Block-Schaub.
  • Graceland: Raap Monument (119 KB)
    This monument was erected 9-19-1916 according to cemetery records. Pretty cool huh? I believe it was dedicated to my ancestor Robert R. Raap Sr., who was in the Spanish-American war. Buried in the *Virtual Cemetery* are: Robert R. Raap Sr. and Anna Schlueter-Raap, John H Raap Jr., Matilda Raap, and Pearl Raap-McWhirter.
  • Ida Markowsky, born December 4, 1893. (234 KB)
    This is the birth certificate of my great-grandmother, Edith Block.

    This was my Baase grandparents' house, shortly before it was sold.

  • Graceland: Spanish-American War Medallion (130 KB)
    This plaque is on the Raap monument, and it reads as follows: (clockwise, on the outer cross, from top): U.S.A., Porto Rico, Cuba, Philipine Islands; (around the inner circle): Spanish War Veterans, 1898 - 1902; (inside the circle): United Army - Navy.

    This is an old map of Germany, from before the reunification. The area highlighted in red is a part of Mecklenburg where some of my Hamlin ancestors came from.

    This is the marriage license of Chas and Sophia Markowsky, dated March 18, 1888.

    This map is a closeup of Mecklenburg, showing several locations that my Hamlin ancestors were from: Klein Wustenfelde, Alt Kalen, Finkenthal, Schlutow, and others.

    My mother's grandparents on her mother's side were married December 26, 1912.
  • Memory Gardens Cemetery and Mausoleum (351 KB)
    This cemetery is at 2501 E. Euclid Ave, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. I neglected to take a picture of the front of this cemetery, so here is a picture of my mother's Uncle Bill's tombstone. Buried in the *Virtual Cemetery* are: William F. Block Jr and Fern Gresens-Block, and his cousin Walter W. Block Jr and Margaret Franke-Block.
